Non-Glossy paper search
« on: August 11, 2011, 04:22:34 pm »

I am looking for a inkjet paper that will have a heavy and tactile feel and have a
surface that will not scratch or flake with handling. But can't be glossy.
I would like to use photo black ink for it's extra edge and saturation.
It will be 8.5x11" format.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

When you say "not glossy" do you mean "not glossy like Costco glossy prints" or "not glossy in any way, not even inkjet paper glossy"?

If your requirement is photo black ink then you have to be on glossy inkjet papers, there's just no way around it due to the ink absorbtion characteristics. However, glossy inkjet papers really aren't super shiny.

Not like Costco, but more like Epson Premium Luster---but a more meaty feel.

Try Museo Silver Rag (natural white) or Breathing Color Vibrance Rag (some kind of optical brightening.)

+1 for Museo Silver Rag and also take a look at Canson Plantine Fibre Rag  Both are 100% cotton rag papers with no OBAs and have a good weight and feel to them.

Are you looking for a fiber based paper, as Museo and Vibrance rag are not RC based and cost most.  I have
used both, and have moved to Canson for now.   All of these will flake IMO.  At least they have for me.  I always
brush the paper before making a print as this helps get off any loose flakes that might be sitting on the paper.

If you are looking for a RC based luster, consider Lexjet esatin.  It's 300 weight and I think much more durable than Epson
260W luster.  It will scratch but not as quickly as Epson.   Also Moab just updated the Lasal line to 300 Weight.  I have not
printed with that paper yet.  Breathing color also makes RC papers now.  They are in the Vibrance line.  In fact they are
on sale right now.  I have not tried them either.

The weight of the Lexjet esatin really helps when working with your print.  Less v creases, scratches, dents etc. It's
just not as fragile.

Mitsubishi Pictorico GKK Pro B&W Premium Matte RC 300 grams is the only matte RC that is heavy too AFAIK. It might be PK compatible. Gekko is the brand name in the US, you have to find its description in their catalog. For the rest you have to check non-RC qualities that usually ask for MK inks, HP Matte Lirho-Realistic 270 grams for example. Matte papers deliver less gamut and Dmax than gloss, PK will not enhance any saturation, it is a black ink.  PK will not increase Density either on matte papers, rather less. If "tactile" means some surface texture then you are asking an even harder to answer question.

met vriendelijke groeten, Ernst

HP Matte Lirho-Realistic can be a candidate, nice feel and weight, plus it acts more like a semigloss paper than a matte regarding contrast and Dmax

I used Epson luster paper for years, but lately I've been using Ilford Smooth Pearl Paper, for my everyday paper.

A big +1, on the Canson Platine...{my favorite }...a really fine paper, with a great feel ,and deep blacks.

Another one you might want to consider is,Harman by Hahnemuhle Gloss Art Fibre.

Hope this  helps,
Mike

I have used both of these papers, but prefer the Canson Platine over the Museo, tho both fit the description of what you might be looking for.  worth a try. Eleanor
