Which camera for my seven year old?
« on: August 07, 2011, 06:51:22 am »

He sees daddy with a camera and wants one too. In the old days one would have given him a Brownie Hawkeye maybe, but today?

Thank you very much in advance for you suggestions and any first hand insights.

regards

A while ago, when my son was 7 - I had gotten him a Polaroid. He loved taking pictures with them. After polaroid died - I just packed the camera away - and refocused and convinced my son on taikwondo and soccer.

The films from the impossible project - are quite impossible to afford on a regular basis - they have become fancy fine art things....

The digital cameras does not have the same feel as that of the polaroids..the instant paper prints are just plain magic.

He does use his iPod touch these days to take images...it is a multi-purpose device (has ipod and games) and has some pretty good apps...plus, he can show the images on the gallery and do post processing all by himself :)

In some way, I think we are already living in the future :)

I bought my 7 year old son an older 4 megapixel used digital point and shoot for $20. Takes perfectly fine pictures and no worries if he breaks it.

I would buy this one for a seven year old. I bought my daughter something similar when she was a lot younger. It's waterproof, shock resistant, and it even takes decent photos. It may not be totally kidproof, but it's close.

Have fun. Just wait until he's old enough to start digging through your equipment locker and "borrowing" gear.

[EDIT: that should read, when she was a lot younger than she is now. Maybe 8 or 9 at the time...]

Maybe you should buy him a Holga.  That's similar to a Brownie.
