A nice shot. I'd like it better without the Washington DC logo on his hat.

Slobodan, I'ts not what it's coming to, it's already come to it. That booth couldn't be from any later than the twenties. Check the booth to the right. Wish I could have gotten more of that in the picture but as it was I tripped the shutter twice in rapid succession and the kid was gone. Up on top the sign on the right says, "Why go to sea? See here!" And then there's the burlesque sign below. This isn't exactly contemporary porno. Some of the stuff in our penny arcade goes back almost to the turn of the century, maybe even before the turn of the century. That's one of the reasons I'd love to do a book on it. It's not quite contemporary with me, but it ain't far off.

Funny thing, porn and what it might be.

My new tv set has a built-in decoder(?) and as penalty, doesn't list the satellite stations in the same order of numbers as did the old gear. Consequently, I set myself the task of running through several hundred very forgettable ones in order to write myself out a list of those I might want to access regularly.

Something that had me in stitches was the 'babe' channels: all those hard-face, dumb-looking and totally sexless women with overblown mammary glands lying about on what must be studio sofas or beds, wearing the most frantic colours of cheap underwear, and comically grinding their hips and tugging their tops up and down (they alternate) whilst waving a mobile telephone at the camera. And to think someone wants to pay to call them? I feel fortunate to be old!

But the booths in the photo: I suspect that the viewers never really got any shocks.

By chance or coincidence, should you be one like myself who believes in it, I caught part of a BBC programme on fairgrounds and shows last night. It informed me that fairgrounds were, in fact, the first users of film, commissioning direct to the makers, and showing around twenty of these things a day. Apparently, cinema houses came much later! I didn't know that.

Rob, Nowadays any kid who's been on the web is un-shockable.
