Canon Glacier Photo 300gsm in Europe = what in USA?
« on: August 01, 2011, 05:42:52 pm »

I see Canon 'Glacier' Photo Quality Paper (300gsm) in Europe, but not in USA.
We have Heavyweight Glossy Photo Paper (300gsm) but Europe has that too (I think) with 'Canon Glossy Photo Quality 300gsm.

On Ernst's wonderful SpectrumViz it appears that Glacier is a similar paper to regular 300gsm Glossy, but with extra OBAs - (or its 'whiter'/bluer at any rate) It is definitely not the exact same though.

but does anyone know what Glacier is in USA, or is it simply not available here?

I really like to check that. Thought about it some days ago. If someone could send me some A4 sheets of Canon Heavyweight Glossy Photo Paper from the US I can at least make some spectral plots and compare it on other aspects too. That RC paper ranks high on Aardenburg's tests of papers, the ink patches and the paper white withstand fading very good.

Thank you - that gave me an 'Ah Ha' moment:  I had assumed that 'Glacier' was a high gloss - but if EU 'Glacier' = US 'Heavyweight Satin Photographic Paper' that would make perfect sense.  'Glacier' is indeed in Ernst's Satin/Luster/Pearl category, duh.

In return I suggest a quick comparison on the wonderful SpectraViz between Canon Glacier/Heavyweight Satin Photo Paper 300gsm and Moab Lasal Photo Exhibition Luster 300gsm.  Say no more.  (except that Moab profiles are very useful for using Canon paper in Epson printers)

The Canon Heavyweight Satin does indeed have an amazing longevity on Aardenberg with Canon inks.  Would be good to know how it goes with Epson inks, although obviously this is promising  Hopefully someone will test the Moab Lasal Exhibition Luster 300gsm on an Epson in Aardenberg soon, and we will have our answer.

AFAIK Glacier aka HW Satin is made for Canon by Tecco GmbH, so no wonder it can also exist in other incarnations as well.

It definitely become my favorite paper after switch to Canon,  it's good as well as cheap...

To the eye, in reflection, the Glacier is more Luster than the Moab  LPE Luster.  So what is in a name? True the spectral plots cover one another. Like the Sihl 4802 and the Tecco EFI Production Premium Semigloss more or less do but their reflections are different too and the Tecco is much lighter in weight.

RC paper bases are a commodity, coatings are applied by a few companies like Sihl but recipes can differ so the variety can still be wide.
