Epson 7900 constantly rattles during printing
« on: July 31, 2011, 07:46:56 pm »

I have an Epson 7900 printer and the long horizontal black (rather flimsy) metal plate that runs across the printer just where the paper exits after printing rattles horribly and constantly during printing.  I have tried to tape it down with masking tape (lots of it) to no avail.  Also there are no screws to tighten either.  I have heard that this is such a "quiet" printer" but mine is not.  Has anyone had this problem and if so have you been able to do anything about it.  Many thanks, Eleanor

That's very unsual - have you spoken to your dealer or to Epson?  I've not come across a machine doing that before.

Eleanor,
The black plate at the very bottom has 5 screws.
2 on the left and the 3 on the right are under the little plastic cover.
It is a very rigid piece attached solidly with those 5 screws.
Are you possibly referring to something else?

Dan, yes I am referring to something else.  The black plate at the bottom is  fairly sturdy and I have also tightened those screws but they were already tight anyway (it still rattles some too).  I am mainly referring to the second metal plate above that plate ( it juts out a little from the lower plate), which has no screws and is located literally where the paper exits the printer... Both of these  plates constantly rattle during printing but especially the top one.  Eleanor

Eleanor,
That metal plate you are talking about is all one piece.
If you look very closely where it steps out 1/4" (Up 3" from the bottom) you will not see any seam in the metal.
It must be loose at the top somewhere as mine is solid as a rock.

thanks Dan.  Actually I've been trying to figure out if these "two" plates are one piece or not!"  I have thought they were but the top part rattles so much more than the lower part I was thinking maybe they weren't.  I just checked the screws again and they are all very tight.  There is no access to tighten the top of the plate that I can see.  Very annoying for sure to deal with rattles with each swipe of the print head!. Elenor,
I remembered reading this thread and I'm at my printer right now .It just dawned on me that there are three plastic 'caps' covers, that are in the area of the bottom plates. they should not be causing a problem, and I would have thought you have checked them already but...
One is gray that is the access cover to change out the cutter assembly, which is on the right underneath the top edge plate. The other 2 are black, one on each inside side of the cart drawers covers. they aree quite loose (to be able to be removed easily to attach the Spectro assembly.
Could it be any of these that are rattling?
One more thing that could be rattling if you have the in the  position against the stand, is the two plastic guides that hang down from the bottom plate that guide the paper into the basket???
