Live Preview on IQ Series
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:39:02 am »

I just had the opportunity to try out the "Live Preview" untethered on one of the Phase One IQ180V systems that we received with the newest firmware installed .

I spent a few minutes with it (will have more time later), but the performance is pretty good.

It is accessed via the lower bottom right hand menu (see image below). You click on the movie camera icon, then open the shutter and the image appears.

We shot out our window of our office into the daylight and we had the aperture set @ f/11 and the preview was not blown out at all.
Then we put a ND filter and set it to f/2.8 and it worked well.

You can zoom all the way up to 400% in the Live Preview mode just like you can do in the full screen preview.

More info to follow as we get some more time to explore it.

But in my opinion it is usable and exceeded my expectations.

No focus mask in Live Preview, just like it is not active in the zoom preview.

Also noticed that IIQS is enabled in Firmware 1.3.3 .

is it in functionality comparable to a dslr's live view, what are the refresh rates and how long can you keep it running?

Hi Lance,

- If I understand it right, the function does not involve the shutter, means it is done with continuously open / used f/stop?

- What is the refresh rate?

- Can it be switched to B&W? And in this case, what is then the refresh rate?

Thanks
Thierry

Is this firmware available for download?  Version 1.19 is the most recent listed on the Phase One website.

Thanks.

I've been testing it for a while, and I'm not as enthusiastic as Lance.

Once the new firmware is released I'll have more to say about it.

Is it good enough to get rid of the focusing glass and loupe on a technical camera?

Michael,

It would be interesting to have info about battery life in cold weather.

When it is finalized, could you please leave your back with live view on in your freezer at -5 or -10C for a few hours and let us know the outcome?

Thanks.

Cheers,
Bernard

Battery life is one of the issues. It's extreemly poor. Under about 15 minutes at room temperature when running continuously.

OK, I'll stick to my D3x. :)

Now to be fair, the amount of time needed to focus accurately an image might not be that super long, but you need at least 15 seconds per image.

Cheers,
Bernard

Let me see if I understand well,

This is a preview and not a live view right?

that means, correct me if I'm wrong, that any correction needs another preview to be verified.

If so, usefull for stills subjects but not exciting either.

But the battery life Michael is talking about when runnin makes it pretty much unusable, no need to say what would happen in low temp reading MR concern.

This is a preview and not a live view right?

Don't get caught up in semantics.

This is basically the same CCD live preview as exisiting backs have had for several years when tethered, but with some modest improvements to quality and speed, and able to be used on the LCD of the digital back without tethering. Frame rates of a "few per second" and ghosting/quirks on moving objects, and some limitations on the amount of light (hence the need for ND filters when in bright sunlight).

Not usable for hand-held, sports, portrait, fashion, or other moving shooting. Low battery life.

I'll wait until I've had more hands-on time to make conclusions, but the realistic expectation here is the use of the live view as a compositional tool on cameras without mirrors (e.g. technical/view cameras) and possibly for live-focusing in the field. For that niche it could be very important.

It is real Live View, not a preview.

The frame rate can be varied between 1 and 4FPS.

Battery life is about 30-40 minutes.

Sorry yes it is Live View.

I also wanted to clarify that this version of the firmware which includes Live View is currently on the IQ180V mount only.

It is my understanding there will be a future release of firmware for the other IQ models that will include this functionality.

Yep - while most of my discussions with our clients has centered around the quality of the video (which is roughly what we expected, considering our experience with tethered Live View from all the digital backs), I hadn't really considered what could be the more pertinent issue, which is the battery life. I can see this improving, though probably not dramatically. So, up front, you'll know to use judiciously, and it may be more useful in the fall/winter than in the spring/summer.

I'll have a review online, along with a second opinion by Mark Dubovoy, as soon as the new firmware is officially announced.
