Test run of Rollei lenses, wide open, on 80MP sensor
« on: July 22, 2011, 06:21:25 pm »

Those who think these old lenses aren't up to standard for 80MP digital sensors might be in for a surprise.

Here's a quick run through of my lenses (except the 150mm which is in storage), all shot wide open in my kitchen.

I might not have nailed absolutely perfect focus (it's 2am here!) so please bear that in mind. And also bear in mind that these are shot wide open, where resolving power of the lens is at its lowest.

Would love to try some of the latest generation AFD lenses on this camera!

I see that the best part, understand the whine, is not missing.
But still not blurred, so go on with your tests  ....

Not yet. It's too late to do it tonight but I would also be curious to see the results.

Yes, nice equipment and very capable lenses. (what I liked in the kitchen is the no-smoking sign just above the cooker)
Graham, are those the lenses you are using regularly in your works?

Jerry, beautifull sense of composition and beauty in your approach. Really liked your work.

Yes, almost all my work has been shot with them.

I just tried processing a file in Leaf Capture. It actually seems more detailed than the Capture One images posted originally, so I have added the Leaf versions too.

Graham, well done! Being French I would recommend you to perform the same tests with a nice Chateau Margaux 61. I am quite sure that the sharpness will improve ;) anyway, no doubts that the "old" lenses are still on the top. AFI/Hy6 + Schneider + AFI ...II form a winner trio. IMHO the system is not dead as many people are mentioning. Take care. Jean-Luc

Would it make any difference to the sharpness if the bottle was empty?

Graham,

I noticed some colour balance changes in the images processed with LC, as well as a sharpening.
Did you change the white balance, respectively did you sharpen the images? The colour change is also noticeable in the dark contour lines.

Cheers

I'd like to see what the 90mm Macro would do - it's an unbelievably sharp lens!

Thierry, it's true there is a colour shift but I left the colour balance settings where they were as all I was interested in was the resolution test. Please ignore colour balance.

Hi G!  Interesting!!   What distance from back to bottle?  Default sharp settings are okay for print but a tad too much(overcooked)for web display, I am sure you are aware but others may not be.
