Mamiya 7 took a hit! Focus X. Lens guide X.
« on: July 10, 2011, 08:57:32 am »

Sad to report that my Mamiya 7 was dropped and now is missing some of the side and bottom plate which seems fine in that there is no light leakage.
However, the various rangefinder screens don't work and the focussing is most definately out.
I assume that if I am using say f16 and manually focus using the lens barrell all should be well and most of the shots are landscapes anyhow it should not matter?
Thanks

Well, what do you got to lose? A roll of 120 film is ~$4...

send it to Mamiya to get it repaired. Better than guess focusing and missing shots.

just my $.02, and I'm usually a cheap-skate :D

however, for something like this, spend the dough, and get it fixed

I am in the Atacama desert and have no access to any film dev'.
Do you know where I can get a look at the framing marks on-line to refresh my memory?
Thanks

I would get something like tracing paper, open the back of your camera, put the paper where the film would go, open the lens and view it under a jacket or something. sketch roughly the scene. Do that for each lens. Cut a card with a 6x7cm aperture and work out the distance for each lens you need to hold it in front of your eye to get the framing. It will only ever be approximate, but you might be surprised at how well it works.
Then on return get if fixed and buy a backup camera.
Or if you can find one for sale online, buy it and get it sent next day delivery, whatever you do will mean spending money or giving up photography.

Looks like perfect opportunity to experiment with pinhole photography.

Do you have a cornflakes box?

Alternatively, why not buy a used MF camera like this one in Chile? If I remember right Iquiquie is not too far from Atacarma.
