Scanning Question Hasselblad X5 or V750M
« on: July 10, 2011, 02:17:52 am »

I have a Fuji GX617 pano camera and I now have  a bunch of shots to get scanned.  In this case, my options are to rent time on a Hasselblad X5 for $40 an hour or buy a $750 V750 M.  Does anyone have any experience scanning 617 slides on the x5 that can tell me what kind of resolution they are getting and how big of enlargements they can make?  I am leaning towards renting time on the X5 because I really don't have that many shots that I want scanned and I want them to be top notch before deciding to send them off for a drum scan.  Does anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks,

If you are eventually going to drum scan the best ones, then the V750M is definitely plenty good enough. In fact, it's probably good enough for fairly good size "normal" prints. So it's just a matter of figuring out whether you will need 20 hours or so on the X5 rental...

The X5 will give you 3200dpi resolution for medium format. Estimates of the V750M's actual resolution vary between 2400-3000dpi. In any case, noticeably less detail is visible at 100% on screen (not to be confused with the need for sharpening the V750M scans more than the X5 scans). Whether this actually becomes apparent in print depends on your target print size, and in my experience the resulting differences in resolution are rather academic at A2+ size (Epson 3800).

The key differentiator between the X5 and V750M however is dynamic range, and here the X5 runs circles around the V750M. The X5 can still detect detail in highlights and shadows (and fine tonal variations in general) where the V750M only sees black and white patches. This is less of an issue for color negatives, but if you have color slides or black&white negatives, I'd clearly lean towards the X5 rental.

Hasselblad X5 and Epson V750M : THIS two completely different worlds. There's nothing to think about. And the scanner is also fast, very fast. The choice is only one: X5, you'll be very happy.

I suggested 3F scan mode. Downloading a program  "Flexcolor" from the internet and you will be able to play those files at will at any time. I highly recommend.

Thanks for all of the information and advice.  I think I am going to give this x5 a try and see how things turn out.
