We seem to be very close to being able to build a self-replicating machine, one that can diagnose itself and build any part necessary for repair.

Amazing!

3D printers have been around for a while now. Smaller/cheaper versions are available in schools in Sydney as we speak. I've had my hands on objects made by them. Instead of a scanner students use CAD software to make objects. Cars used in the F1 in Schools Australia National Finals 2009-2010 Highlights were made using 3D printers. Check out the video those cars are fast.

On the other hand that scanner is something else. A hand-held scanner with that accuracy and the ability to scan hidden details is very impressive.

It'll be interesting to see how this genre of technology progresses over the next 5 to 20 years.
