Rain cover for MF DSLR
« on: July 06, 2011, 05:20:44 pm »

Hello fellow shooters,
I'm looking for a good rain cover to fit my Phase One DF, with 45mm and 75-150mm lenses. I currently own the Kata E-702. It's just ok., not great. My main concern is to have just enough room inside the cover to be able to manual focus and work the zoom lens. The other problem with the Kata is that it fogs up very easily. It works, but it's not great. The materials and construction have held up so far, but do seem like it could easily be damaged. Considering I'm trying to keep my super expensive camera dry, I'd really like to have a better rain cover. Better fit, no fogging, and reliable construction.
I wonder about two rain covers, Aquatech and Thinktank. Ufortunately I have no idea if they fit my camera well (no local dealers to try in person).
Has anybody had any good experiences with other rain covers on a MF DSLR?
Thanks!

You might wish to try a transparent ladies shower cap.  It's generally loose enough at the height of the camera to make adjustments and fire the shutter.  ;) ;)

A pink one with flowers would certainly look better than my current "solution" - a trash bag with a cut hole ;D

I would try the Thinktank one.  They make pretty tough equipment.  I've used the Kata one on a shoot in Scotland and it's ok but I'm not sure how long it would last.

2-gallon zip-lock bag, cut one side and 3/4ths of the bottom out leaving the 1/4 at the same end the zip is when the bag is closed.  That is now the top-rear of your rain cover and the open side is the bottom; you then zip the bag shut around the lens-hood and you're good to go.

I have used everything from Lightware to thinktank and custom made coated nylon bags, and nothing works as well or is as easy to use as these. These are dirt cheap and you can carry a couple of them in your bag.
