Epson 4000
« on: July 02, 2011, 11:25:43 pm »

I'm having trouble with my 4000 not shooting any ink out, not sure if it's software or hardware yet. Paper feeds in and head travels back and forth like it's printing but no ink comes out. I have - reinstalled the driver, power cleaned and I can print a nozzle check sheet without problems. I've had this since 2004 with few problems.
Operating on an Imac intel 10.6.8
Any help would be appreciated as I use this for work.

Have you tried a nozzle check?

Run the check from the panel. You may also try pulling the carts and giving each a shake especially if you haven't printed in awhile.

If the nozzle check pattern works, then there's no issue with the print head.

Have you run the Common Updater for the driver?

Sometimes this happens if your file size is too large.  This happened to me a couple of days ago printing from Lightroom sending an iq180 file to print 40" long and I was testing sending it at 720 ppi. Everything was fine I thought till I pulled the print out - nothing printed at all. This was from a MacBook pro with 8 gigs of ram. Using 360 resolved the problem.

Thanks for the replies, I have run a nozzle check without a problem the sheet prints out fine. I have been printing a lot lately so most ink is new. File size doesn't matter. I'm thinking it's the driver and will try a reinstall again this morning and let you know.

An update  I can print out of Iphoto and DPP so there is something going on with PS (12.04) that stops the printer from printing. Any ideas?

EMay, I have exactly the same problem in the moment with my Epson 4800. Two weeks ago the same erroor from the printhead (moving like printing from the begin of the page til the end of the page, but printing the picture. Then, from one print to the other, everything was fine and now, same move from the head but no colors! I have to print so much for clients. Any help?

You need to post exact file dimensions, 8 ot 16 it print path, exact PS and driver settings, then we can evaluate what might be going on.

Hello Farmer, to recap and add info;
OSX 10.6.7 iMac Intel
PS CS5 12.0
Jpg. size 88.7m, 6892px w x 4500px h
resolution 300ppi
8 bit
PS settings;
Color management - Document (srgb)
PS manages color
Profile - 4000 Hahnemuehle Photo Rag Pearl 320 GM1 (this is the one that doesn't work)
Relative Colorimetric, black point compensation

Driver settings;
Color matching -Colorsync
Roll paper borderless
Media - Premium Luster Photo Paper
No color adjustment
High Speed off
2880dpi

Eric Chan made the profiles I use and I don't have any problems with them, he did send me a replacement for this one and it still doesn't solve the problem. In my opinion it's not the profile. Thanks.

This may be a long shot, but try the installer listed under Printer Failure at this link to downgrade potentially problematic files to a version prior to 10.6.8. Maybe your downgrade to 10.3 and subsequent upgrade to 10.6.7 didn't get rid of the files that were upgraded by 10.6.8.

Emay - I see no issues with the workflow and we know the printer physically works.  You mention the paper profile and say "this one doesn't work" - does that mean others do?

Do you have any other printers to which you can print from PS?

Have you tried resetting PS settings?

Farmer, yes other profiles work although I like the colors I get out of the one that doesn't work with the printer anymore. I can use a Canon i960 with PS but I use that for letters etc.  Resetting PS? Not sure what you mean by this.

You can reset the preferences (which might help, but be aware all your preferences in PS will be reset and you'll need to go through and set them again.

Hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option and then click to open/start Photoshop - that will reset the preferences to default.

If that doesn't help, then I guess there might be something wrong with the profile, but I really don't know what.  What we can say is that everything else is working because you've tested that and there's only one factor that causes the fault - use of that profile.

That also didn't work. I don't think it's the profile because I received a new one from Eric, there is some corruption between the driver/PS/profile that can't be resolved by uninstalling/reinstalling those programs, which I've done including the OS. Thanks for the replies!

sounds like a bug that exists in osx with some 2.4 ICC profiles.   see this adobe list... and check your paper very carefully to see if you have a slight cyan/black colour.....

http://forums.adobe.com/message/3172530#3172530

my printer went across entire page and for the length of the paper.   eventually I dropped all xrite 2.4 profiles purchased spyder print and have had no problems since....

funny though no problems with the profiles in lightroom or aperture only CS5 and PSE 9 both from the same base...

What's even more funny is that I've been using the profile in question with great results until the 10.6.8 update. Will read the forum message you posted. Thanks

Well I just read it and I don't feel so alone ;)

One more thing.   Spyder Print only generates ICC 2.0 profiles.  I  downloaded some profiles from other sites that were older xrite 2.0 profiles and they worked perfectly. (obviously useless from a colour point of view but showed the problems were with ICC 2.4 xrite profiles...

All points to OSX 10.6... and CS5/PSE9 issues....    my problem started with 10.6.xxxxxx  and is still there with 10.6.8..  there are more posts on apple discussions lists......

in the mean time I am up and running using 2.0  profiles..
Lastly.      My clients (giclees of Original Paintings)  prefer my new profiles and the colours they get with them. (no other changes)

best elo
