Scanner not found problem with Imacon 848
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:01:54 am »

I am trying to install an Imacon 848 scanner and I keep on getting a message : ID 9 : Scanner not found.
I am using Flexcolor v 4.8.8 on a Windows 64 bit system.  When I power up the scanner the green light first blinks, then stays on as I think it should. I can't do anything with the software though since it can't see the scanner.  I have tried changing the firewire cable, and I still have the problem.  Any ideas ? - please ?

Don't have this scanner. But in general when you install a device on windows you need to install the software before you hook the device up to the computer. If you connected the device to the computer before installing the software you should go to control panel, look for scanners and make sure the the scanner is not listed. If it is listed, uninstall it. Then install the software and then connect the scanner.
What version of Windows are you using XP, Vista, Windows 7?
If you have installed the software and then connected the scanner:
Go to control panel and select device manager
click on scanner in Windows7 scanners are under imaging devices
right click on you scanner and then click on properties
What  is device status? Should say device is working properly or give you an error  messages. You might see a yellow triangle with a message for example
Click on drivers to see if the driver is installed.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your help Les - the situation is improved but not fixed I am afraid.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit OS.  Actually the scanner was totally invisible to the PC. I could not see it under the IEEE 1394 Firewire connected devices - or as a scanner. Its strange because I rebooted the PC and powered the scanner on and off a number of times and at one point it did appear but not under the firewire devices but seperately as a scanner.  In the Device Properties window it had the yellow triangle which I clicked on and it indicated a driver problem. At that stage I chose the option to search for and install a new driver - which it did and the Flexcolor software recognised the scanner and it worked properly ... but ... as soon as I powered down the PC and scanner and powered up again the scanner had disappeared and the Flexcolor software would of course not work.

Since then I have found out that the scanner seems to "hang" when this happens.  I need to hold the power switch in for a few seconds to force the power off.  Then if I switch the scanner on and off a few times it becomes visible to the PC and works again.

Very exasperating ... any ideas ?

Some possible ideas:
Go to device manager and select your IEEE 1394 controller.
Right click on properties. Check device status--should be working properly
Check driver and see if there is an update if so install it. If the update doesn't solve your problem, roll back and then look at the websites below.
Click on resources and check to be sure that there are no conflicts
Chick on power management and make sure that you have not checked allow the computer to turn off this device
Firewire on Windows7 can be a problem generally associated with the MS drivers.
Try these websites for help http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/65cb7a25-2a84-4875-aa27-b084537e8da1/ long thread probably a good starting place.
This website offers a solution that may work for you http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/Firewire-1.htm. It suggests you use the legacy firewire driver.
Microsoft has a whitepaper on IEEE1394 at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg454502.aspx might have useful information for you.

Good luck and have fun.

Hello Les,
I really appreciate your help with this.  I am certainly going to try your suggestions.  I will let you know how I go.  I certainly think the legacy IEEE1394 drivers are possibly a solution - at least I hope so as this is very frustrating.

Les - you are a wizard !!!

Thanks - Its fixed thanks to you.  After a week of struggling with what feels like 50 fixes and 100 reboots I got the Imacon 848 to work properly.  The fix was installing the legacy IEEE1394 driver as you suggested.

The scanner is really great, and now it powers up and connects properly every time.

I really appreciate your help - thanks very much !

Best - Terence
