Make love not war
« on: June 17, 2011, 04:43:30 pm »

From CBC News Canada:

"The mystery identity of the couple kissing while lying on a Vancouver street as riot police battled crowds following the Canucks' Stanley Cup loss has been revealed as Australian Scott Jones and his Canadian girlfriend Alex Thomas."

It's good to see Aussies showing the way, more here:

Of course it was contrived.  Even without the French pic, I never thought it was anything but...

RG has about 6 links explaining the true story behind the image and no it isn't a fake.

I don't think it was fake, just contrived to be counter point to the chaos.  My skepticism tends to overwhelm my emotion side from time to time.

How is 'contrived' not fake? Either it was a girl knocked down whose boyfriend was trying to comfort her or it was a set up. If it was the former as claimed by the reports, the people involved and the photographer then the only use of the word 'contrived' would be to describe the use of that image by the newspapers in an attempt to make light of the riot but let's be honest, what newspaper would be able not to run an image like that? it's just too good.

It'll result in a rash.

You are taking my comment beyond its intent.  First, I never said the newspaper should not run the photo.  I only expressed my opinion that the kiss looked contrived by the two participants.  I could be wrong, but that is my opinion.

BTW, it is quite easy to for a photo to be contrived, but not faked.  Add a leaf to a photo for effect and you have deliberately created an image that did not arise naturally of spontaneously.  So, she may have fallen and they decided on that spot to "make love and not war" as political statement.

Journalistically, there is no difference. Either term would indicate that the photographer played an active role in the deception.

Whether or not the subjects were acting or faking is immaterial, as long as the photographer is unaware. Of course, any good photojournalist would, if possible, get the facts (in this case it was probably not) or caption the image appropriately, providing context without supposition.
