PhaseOne 80mm 2.8 AF
« on: June 15, 2011, 04:09:58 am »

Hi all.

Can you tell me how many different PhaseOne 80mm 2.8 have been produced? I found the LF and the AF on the web site, I will get the AF. Because I have been told that the lenses are very important to have maximum quality on digital backs I'd like to know if there are different AF or if there is just one and what could be a good price for this lens, maybe with a 645AF camera (at the moment I don't need the faster DF camera with LS lenses).

Thanks.

Phase One has only produced those two, before that there was the old Mamiya version 80mm AF which has nice optics but crappy build quality. If you can afford it go with the latest version.

Old Mamiya version

Phase One 80mm LS (left), Phase One 80mm "D" (right).

From oldest to newest:
Mamiya 80mm Sekor f/2.8 (manual focus, manual aperture/diaphragm)
Mamiya 80mm Sekor f/1.9 (manual focus, manual aperture/diaphragm)

Mamiya 80mm AF f/2.8 (autofocus, auto diaphragm, mediocre build quality)

Phase One 80mm D f/2.8 (aka "Mamiya 80mm D" in some markets, good build quality)
Schneider 80mm LS D f/2.8 (aka "Mamiya 80mm LS D" in some markets, good build quality, includes leaf shutter)

Then you could also use the Hasselblad Planar 80mm f/2.8 (old 500 series lens), the FE 100mm f/2.2 (old 200 series lens). These two lenses (and other Hassy lenses) would require the appropriate HAB-MAM lens adapter and would provide autofocus confirmation (but obviously not autofocus) and would, in practice, be limited to shooting near wide-open or on a tripod (since you have to manually close the aperture between focusing/composing and taking the shot).

There are other more obscure options out there like the Pentax 6x7 90mm f/2.8 lens with appropriate adapter.

Lots of options on the Phase One platform! Shameless plug that it helps if you're buying from and working with a dealer that is familiar with all of them and let you know when to jump on the latest/greatest/most-expensive (e.g. 150mm D) and when you can save your money and go a generation or two back (e.g. 120mm Macro depending on need).

Plus a few that Doug forgot:

Mamiya Sekor 80mm f4 Macro
Mamiya Sekor 80mm f2.8 LS
Mamiya Sekor 70mm f2.8 LS
[well he did stray from 80mm too!]

And if we are talking adapted lenses, there's all the P6-mount ones:
CZJ Biometar 80mm f2.8
Exakta Biometar 80mm f2.8
Schneider Xenotar 80mm f2.8
[super lens]
...and a slew of Kiev/Arsenal 80mm f2.8 and 90mm f2.8 versions...

BTW there's nothing magical about the HAB-MAM lens adapter from P1 - it's very expensive for what it is; equally good ones with identical functionality are out there for much less.

While we're talking about lot's of confusing 80mm options, let's not also forget that the older manual lenses came with different coatings in their C & N variants too. ;)

Thanks to all for the nice infos.

I think I will get the AFD PhaseOne camera (not the latest model) with a P30+ back.

Does the LS improve resolution/quality or the only difference is the shutter?

IIRC, the non leaf shutter lens is made by Mamiya and the leaf shutter 80 is Schneider.  I played with the Schneider made lens and was quite impressed.  Just wish it was an f/2 like Contax.

I agree, I wish when PhaseOne made the "D" version they would have used the f/1.9 design and not the f/2.8, like they used the faster design for the new 150mm. I bought the old MF lens instead just because of this. It's too bad, it would have been a killer selling point too for the P1 system.

Can the newer leaf shutter lenses be used on older bodies in a 'dumb' focal-plane shutter mode? I.e., do they default to an open shutter? That'd make them a useable step on the ladder for those with older bodies.
