Maine locations???
« on: June 06, 2011, 02:35:47 pm »

I'm planning a trip to Maine, to photograph the Fall foliage, and other points of interest.,seashore, seaport villages.
Trip will be for 5-7 days.
I've gone on the Maine tourism website, and found some good info on Arcadia National Park.
Any suggestions/advise would be appreciated.
I'll be driving up from NYC.

Thanks,
Mike

Nope. Nuthin to see up here!! You might as well stay home!  ;D

Seriously tho... first ..it is spelled ACADIA not aRcadia. Just so you know.

As I live up here right next to the park so to speak.. I suggest you look at the maps for a place called Schoodic Point which is still a part of Acadia Nat Park but off the beaten path. It is further Down East and as such not as well known nor visited. A really nice place and just as scenic as the main island. From there the whole area is a collection of working seashore villages and scenic places including the blueberry barrens which are all over the place and in the fall are ablaze with color.

Don't forget... lobster is only about $5 a pound!! What more reason do you need to come up here! Enjoy!

I start the 24 days the fall every year starting in Maine then head south and also to New York and Penn.  I find it very exciting and pleasing to the eye.  But shooting from a canoe and standing in the water very tough.  One slip and the Phase system in done and over.  I like the Acadia Park also, but find the small ponds to be my favorite.  Here are some from Maine.  This year I will be shooting with one of my students from a water plane hopping all over Maine and New Hampshire.  Tim

Hi, Mike. Where in NYC do you live? I'm in Astoria.

Maine is one of my favorite places to shoot. I've been up there quite a bit, especially along the coast. I have two location reports on my website about shooting up there, at Acadia and around Rockland.

It looks like you already have a couple of good brains to pick here, but if there's anything else I can help with, I'd be happy to.

If U're in Acadia, then short drive south takes U to 'Camden' on the coast. I think that is real nice Seaside Village.

Coastal Maine is one of my favorite locations.  See my PM to you for a link to some of my images of Maine.  I would be glad to provide the locations of any that interest you.

I have to disagree here... Camden is a tourist trap like Bar Harbor is. In BOTH places, good luck finding a place to park. I try to avoid bar Harbor in the summer for that reason and If you don't get thru Camden heading south before 10AM, you'll get hung up in serious traffic.
Best to avoid both places.  That short drive is almost 2 hours  of tourist traffic in the summer.

Hey Mike,

I don't know if you are familiar with  Paul Caponigro's work, be he has an on going exhibition at Rockland, Maine through October 9th. Rockland is between Portland and Acadia on the Maine coast. The show is at the Farnsworth museum. Paul does large format traditional B&W. His work is not to be missed. About 15 years ago I traveled up to his studio, talked with him, looked at some of his prints and showed some of mine. I ended up buying one of his prints, and it was an experience I won't forget. I think he has about 60 prints in the exhibit. Betsy and I are going up to see it the last week of September and then spending a few days on Acadia. Don't miss the opportunity!

I'm going up to Rockland later this week to see Paul's show.
IMHO, he is the best!

Skip Bar Harbor and Camden.  Back in 1990 Camden was great and you could really shoot there but not now.  Its all restricted. Try the little Islands that are connected to the Mainland.  I would be able to tell you where but my maps are back in Maine.  But I will be there this as usual.  Its amazing.  But are you there to shoot fall or the shoreline?  T

Just wanted to say ,thank you for all your suggestions/advise.
I got back from Maine about 2 weeks ago..it rained the first 4 days, then, we got some decent weather.
The wife & I went out each day for 8 days, rain or shine.
For those of you ,who have never been up to Acadia/Bar Harbor, Maine,I strongly urge you to  see it.
The people are great, scenery is fantastic, especially Cadillac Mountain, the only thing better, were the lobsters, and blueberry pie.

Here is a link to some of the images ,we manged to get:
