Big Horn Mtns, WY
« on: June 04, 2011, 09:50:43 am »

I'm planning on camping in the Big Horns for a night or two so that I can get some sunrise/sunset/twilight shots. Can anyone recommend a campground? I've picked out a couple on HWY 16 outside of Buffalo but wanted to get some feed back.

Thanks!

You realize that you do NOT have to camp in a campground on National Forest managed land??  You can probably camp at the location of your shoot.

Here are the new rules for vehicle use and camping on FS lands: http://usbackroads.blogspot.com/2010/07/forest-service-boondock-locations.html

Here is the link for the motor vehicle use map for the Big Horn: http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPyhQoY6BdkOyoCAGixyPg!/?navtype=&cid=stelprdb5166816&navid=110000000000000&pnavid=&ss=110202&position=Not%20Yet%20Determined.Html&ttype=detail&pname=Bighorn%20National%20Forest-%20OHV%20Riding

Don't forget that the Bighorn National Forest is prime grizzly bear country!!!  So be careful out there.

The Bighorn National forest is NOT prime grizzly bear country.
In 40 years of camping there I have never seen a grizzly bear!

There are a moderate number of black bears, so store your food in a safe place.
The bighorns are heavily forested, so a good photo location for sunrise/sunset shots is hard to find.

The Beartooth Mts about 40 miles to the Northwest are far more photogenic.
The Beartooth Highway is an amazingly scenic route.
It does have grizzlies though!

Your correct.

Sorry, I thought I remembered a friend that lived in Sheriden telling me about the grizzly bears.  Must have been a senior moment.
