Lightweight tripod for the M9
« on: May 27, 2011, 05:59:25 am »

I would really like some advice on the best lightweight tripod to use with my M9.  I currently have a Gitzo 3530 plus Arca Swiss Cube and a Really Right Stuff plate and rail system.  This works well with my D3X outfit but is just too big, heavy and bulky for my M9.  I have an RRS L plate for the M9 and would prefer this method of attachment to the tripod.  Most of my work with the M9 is hand held but there are occasions when a tripod would be helpful.  I shoot street, architecture and landscape.

How about one of the Gitzo Traveller tripods?  I have the T1550 and really like it!  :)

I'm a RRS user, too, and couldnt work without it.

Just bought a Benro C-158 carbon tripod and a Markins Q3 Emille head. About 3 lbs (1.5 kg) and the head is RRS compatible. So far, as well build as the Carbon Manfrotto and Arca head.

I have the FlashPoint Gitzo knock-off 1128? that's like a Mountaineer and the Benro is a better build and more rigid, though a few ounces heavier (not much!)

The FlashPoint was adequate for a commercial shoot in Europe and size, weight, price were factors. At full leg height, it's not as rigid as my others but with care and cable release, did the job using a D300 with battery pack and PC lens. I almost wish I had the next size larger, thus I bought the Benro.

The M9 is a bit lighter and smaller than my system and either may do the job for you.

The go-to high-quality and high-cost tripod is Gitzo 1541T. I have it with Markins Q3T ballhead which is designed specifically for the tripod: it allows the legs to fold in for a very compact package. It fits in my standard airline carry-on bag with the ballhead attached. The tripod is very solid for it's size and weight, and all three legs can be released at once with a twist of a wrist for quick deployment. I highly recommend it - it's not cheap by any means, though.

I recently bought a Manfrotto 055CXpro, which I'm happy with so far. I prefer the lever locks to twist locks, FWIW.

Thanks guys.

I have ended up with a Calumet (Gitzo lookalike) and a Benro head.  Thanks for all your help.
