I just installed 3.4.1 this morning - so far it looks fine, but I have not had any time to really test it out. Has anyone come across any snags yet? And what, exactly, was the bug in 3.4 that caused this quick update? Did anyone trip over it?

Thanks for that.

Sounds like a pretty obscure bug - if I'd known just how obscure I'd have left 3.4 on my PC.

I have done a bit more testing on 3.4.1 now, and I am a little saddened to see that the bug with the Vignette tool has still not been fixed. Specifically -

After a Highlight Priority Vignette has been applied, further edits using a local brush or gradient filter which apply an EV correction (either up or down) will also alter the Vignette intensity over the whole of the image.

Which obviously should not happen, and has been a bug since 3.0.

Have you reported the bug? I've tried to do what you seem to describe and I can't reproduce a problem. Can you list the exact steps?

I mentioned it here some time ago, and Eric Chan replied that it was a known issue. I am on PC, not a Mac, if it makes a difference (Win 7 64 bit).

The steps -

1. Apply a highlight priority vignette
2. Set Highlight priority to 100%
3. Open Local Adjustment Brush, apply mask to a small area
4. Set EV to -2EV
5. Observe Vignette darken

OK, now I do see what you mean (on Mac). I'd had the amount % at -100 but it seems it must be a positive value for things to go wrong.

Yes, of course most people would do the vignette last after all their other edits and would not notice a problem.

But I don't work that way - I tend to apply the vignette early on in the edit, because it is a fundamental part of my "look", and then fine-tune the image after that. So of course I run into this problem of the vignette changing all by itself and having to manipulate the balance all over again, or not using EV as an adjustment and having to use brightness instead. Which might not be what I want. So it is a problem for me, but probably not for many other people.

Not dismissing it. Generally I'd expect vignettes to be applied as a finishing touch, but the order in which you apply adjustments shouldn't affect the end result, so there's clearly something wrong here. If it's known, I might have expected a fix in 3.4, though not it this exceptional 3.4.1.

Messing about with this issue a bit more last night, and I find that the Highlight Priority Vignette also interacts with -

The Gradient Filter when an EV adjustement is used

And Highlight Recovery (the vignette darkens as recovery is applied)

All of which is not so bad when you are forewarned, but can really mess with your head if you are not expecting it.

John,

Thanks, that explains a lot of things. A strong post-crop vignette is a key part of my personal style, too, and I usually apply it early in the process. Thanks for the heads-up.

This bug also explains something which puzzled me for ages, even if I had applied the vignette almost last in the edit process. Why sometimes did it seem like I needed masses of minus value to get it dark enough, and other times just -20 or so was plenty? The answer, of course, is that the intensity of the final vignette was being affected by any steps I had made previously - using brushes or grads and EV adjustments, or just highlight recovery.

The snag, I suspect, is that if they put this right, then when I revisit older edits using the debugged version of LR all my previous vignette settings will be scrambled. Which won't affect my exported TIFFs, but it will totally screw my edited RAWs. And I use those for all subsequent reprints an re-edits.

So maybe Eric and the Team have a nice little problem to deal with.

On reading the release notes fro 3.4.1 more carefully, I see that another really annoying little bug has indeed been fixed in this release.

This is the one where LR would not save your colour noise reduction settings properly in a Snapshot or a preset. I mentioned this one ages ago, too, and it was the same in LR 2 as well. The scenario was - supposing you create a series of snapshots as you edit, 1, 2, 3 etc. If colour noise reduction was set zero in snapshots 1 and 2, and then you set NR to say 25 and created snapshot 3, if you then switched back to snapshot 1 or 2 for comparison, on returning to snapshot 3 NR would be back to zero again. This was infuriating, because it was easy to miss that this had happened if the NR was just one of several other edits.

I had a go with this last night, and it seemed to be working properly at last.
