CED best settings for V2 ICC laptop
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:35:57 am »

HEy Guys

I'm trying to get the best out of my 2011 MBP with CED and wondering what settings I should be using.

Currently I use a XRpro and monitor native WB, gamma 2.2, 130candle and min black.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks in advance

The DTP-94 (Monaco Optix XR) is not suitable for screens (such as your MBP) that have white LED backlights. Best option at the moment would be the Spyder 3.

As for CEDP settings... for general editing (editing RAW files, Photoshop work, etc... not doing screen-to-print matching) I'd recommend a native white point, gamma of 2.2 for your particular screen (nice discussion on L* vs. gamma 2.2 here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=31553.0 ) relative minimum for black point (unless you see some color casts in which case you may try raising the black point in 0.05 cd/m^2 increments until the casts are neutralized) and for luminance... a lot of that depends upon the ambient light in your editing environment. I personally find 130 cd/m^2 to be too bright (headacheville) for the environment I work in. I shoot for 110 cd/m^2 (it also happens to be the correct level for screen to print matches which is another thing to consider). So luminance will ultimately depend upon your editing environment.

Cheers, Joe

Thanks Joe
What are the issues with the XR on the MBP screen.

Edit environment changes from inside a seaport-type case to a blackout tent with-in the day. Getting the mid points right compared to the proof is always the goal and challenge.

Thanks Joe

There's something about white LEDs that causes inconsistent results out of the XR. I've noticed that it manifests itself in terms of different color casts from profile to profile (I have a 17" MBP with a matte screen myself, although I don't use it for editing, I do have it profiled).

If your ambient light is changing then your screen luminance should be as well. I'd recommend a different profile for each environment. If you set the display settings to "Apple Cinema Display, iMac, laptop" then CEDP will reset the brightness for you when you run the LUT Loader so...

In system prefs select the appropriate profile
Hit command spacebar (this should bring up Spotlight)... type in lut (should bring up the LUT Loader) and hit return (or you could put the LUT Loader somewhere where it's quick to get to).
Your backlight level (and thus the luminance) will automatically be adjusted.

Cheers, Joe
