I live in a suburb near Milwaukee, and I would agree that there is lots of interesting landscape to photograph in Door County -- there's Peninsula and Newport state parks, several well-preserved lighthouses, and an assortment of quaint (if somewhat touristy   ) small towns and harbors.

If you enjoy people-photography (some who are better at it than I am call it "photojournalism"), there are many opportunities, including wonderful rural county fairs in the summertime, and other small-town-American traditions such as Independence Day parades down local main streets complete with fire-engines,  high school marching bands, and local politicians waving from convertibles.

Hey Guys -

Madison is about 2 to 3 hours from Chicago I believe, which is where I'm at right now.  I'd rather be in New Mexico though!!  But I'm here because I'm employed - and in this economy, that's a real blessing.

So, back to Chicago - 3rd largest city in the US.  If you like architecture, you'll enjoy this town!  Tons of old churches, skyscrapers, and so on.

* Air and Water Show every summer is spectacular!  (best spot is on the lake watching the military jets/choppers/... fly by)
* As others have mentioned, Devil's Lake (WI) is pretty good.
* Lake Michigan provides a great sunrise/sunset everyday.

All in all, it's not a terrible place to be.  But it's cold about 9 months of the year!

Good luck!!

Well it's been a long time and I would like to thank everyone for their comments.  After many ups and downs my wife's position has solidified and UW and so we will be moving to Madison in January.
Now we have to sell a house and then buy a house before the move (we have 3 dogs so renting is more or les out of the question) plus lots of other things.  I'll be selling my photos at the art show tent at the festival of the cranes at the Bosque - so have lots of work to do for that.
We'll miss New Mexico but we will be coming back.

We've been here since the start of the year - and I haven't done anything - except for a work trip to El Salvador ( where I did take photos).  Unfortunately my wife and 3 yr old both broke bones the same week (knee cap and arm respectively, unrelated accidents) and I've had to look after the cripples since then.  Plus we decided to buy a house.

Hopefully things will change soon.

We are contemplating moving from Socorro, NM to Madison Wi. It's not a done deal yet but we will be visiting tomorrow for a few days.  Part of the decision will involve in how happy I will be in moving from the desert, mountains, sky, and the Bosque to relatively flat lands, trees, and green stuff (not to mention the cold, cheeseheads, and cornfields, as our colleagues here in Socorro like to point out).  My wife will have the full time job - I will have a half time job for at least a few years.  I am just curious about what the photo oppotunities are in this area?

thanks

I live just north of Milwaukee and would have to agree with the above post.  There are alot of forests, particularily up north, which can make for nice fall colors.  Farms are plentiful, but probably not as prevelant as the perception is.  The Door County area is scenic all year round.  There are many lighthouses and waterfalls.  Plus, you will be near the Dells and Devil's Lake state park, which offer some great photo opps.  All in all, I think you will find things to photograph, it will just be a bit different than what you are used to.

There are also some great places to shoot on the Mississippi, which is only a hour and a half from Madison.  If you have a canoe, the Boundary Waters are not too far.  Madison is a great town.  If you get a chance on State Street a block or two from campus there is a great Lebanese place to eat.  There are two on the same block, so make sure you go to the dumpy one.
Black River State Forest is outstanding for views and wildlife.  Then Crux Medows is one of the best places to shoot bird shots.

I have always loved Madison.  Great town.

I  lived in the Madison area for about 12 years. I now spend a few months here (Wis Rapids) during the summer or fall each year. As previously stated, the Mississippi River offers good photo shooting oppurtunities, especially during the fall. Also you have to plan a trip up to the Lake Superior shoreline (From Grand Marais to Munising in the U.P.) for the fall colors. I have been told by several people that this shoreline is as good, if not better than Maine's coastline in the fall. In the spring you can politely ask farmers, who have woodlands, for permission to walk in the woods to do some spring blooms. The only hinderance here is that the spring turkey hunt runs for 6 consectutive weekends starting in mid April and a lot of the private lands and most of the public lands are being used for hunting. I still have found farms that don't allow hunting but would probably let you for photography. My advice here is to wear some type of blaze orange headgear. Helps both you and the hunter if you were to accidently bump into a situation at or near ajoining properties. State parks are an alterantive and a lot offer hiking trails that cover a lot of different terrain and foilage. Copper Falls SP is one of my favorites. By the way, I am going to be settling down in the southwest part of the country. I have been traveling for about ten years now and really like it there. It is great living in WI, but the winters here are for younger folks.
Regards - RW

Ralser, just curious how you are settling in and if you found any good photo spots you want to share.

In the Bosque, they are called Sand Hill cranes.  In Wisconsin, just average sized mosquitos.
