Business-card-size target
« on: May 13, 2011, 03:01:53 pm »

OK. It's a bit bigger than business card size, 2 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. I received one today in the mail with no explanation. There is a URL printed on the card:
xritephoto.com/CCcameras

Apparently I got this because I registered a Colormunki. Did everyone who got a Colormunki receive one? I gather from the link that it's meant to profile my cameras. Any reason I can't do that with my Xrite passport instead? I'm trying to think what might be better (other than compactness) with this card.

You mean the mini ColorChecker?

http://www.pictureline.com/x-rite-mini-color-checker-chart.html?___store=default

I don't know. The envelope it came in says colorchecker CLASSIC. It seems a bit bigger than the description they have on that link for xrite mini ColorChecker. And it's not much more than a bunch of colored squares on a piece of cardboard. Actually, it looks like it must be two pieces of thick, black paper glued together with a square grid punched out of one layer to reveal the colors.

The layout is also different from what's pictured on the link you gave. There's a mm scale on one end, and it says xrite colorchecker CLASSIC on the other end.

Googling around, I found this website that seems to describe what's going on.

It's not a Passport. I have one of those already, and it's quite a bit bigger, made of plastic, and more able to withstand mishandling. This one would probably be easy to tear in half with my fingers. It's really like a business card in a pouch.

Did you see my link to the article about the promo? There are several:

http://www.shutterbug.com/news/111910xrite/
http://blog.xritephoto.com/?p=2926
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-10056-11007

etc.

Most of them cite a page that no longer exists, I'm guessing because the promo has expired.

X-Rite has officially discontinued the ColorChecker Mini, http://www.xrite.com/top_support.aspx?action=discontinued, which was 3.25 x 2.25 inches in size and came in a gray plastic slip cover, as Andrew noted. Instead X-Rite is including a "ColorChecker Classic (mini)" in the i1Profiler packages. This new "(mini)" is the same size as the ColorChecker Classic chart from the ColorChecker Passport, 4.25 x 2.5 inches, almost twice the size of the original Mini. The new "(mini)" comes in a paper slip cover.

To date, the new ColorChecker Classic (mini) has not been added to their product list so their is no way to order a replacement should you lose or trash it. The ColorChecker Proof, the new version of the ColorChecker Classic with a hole in each patch, used for print proofing, has also not been added to their product list. I assume that these omissions are an oversight on X-Rite's part, at least I hope so, for the user's sake.
