Flower photos
« on: May 13, 2011, 02:33:45 pm »

I've never really been a photographer of flowers, but just recently started shooting a few. I'm going to start posting some here, in the hope of constructive feedback to improve my photography in this area. I'm quite happy for this to turn into a Flower Thread, à la the ones elsewhere on clouds & trees, so if others want to post their flowers here too, that's fine with me.

I'd like to kick off with a shot of a rose

Nicely done, Bill. I wish the stuff in the lower left wasn't there, though. It's just distracting.

I could maybe clone it out, though I generally try to avoid doing such things (dust spots aside). Or maybe a square crop?

Leave the crop as it is. The negative space gives the flower a presence it wouldn't posses within a tight crop.
Considering that the area in question is an isolated area, in the corner of the frame and easily deletable, I think you can get rid of it without feeling like you've cheated. I would.

I agree, and if you don't feel right about 'cloning' it out, just create a mask to lower the luminosity in that area!  Dimming it out is just removing the light - later...

Cloning worked a treat, and you were right about cropping, so I've left that alone. Thanks for the comments.

Hello
just a beginner so bear with me-
I would rather be a flower than a pig-
sounds like a vetoed line from a simon & garfunkle tune yes?
here's my two current favorites

Bluebells! Used to be the bane of my life (I exaggerate slightly); impossible to get the colour right on Fuji or Kodachrome. Digital at last made it possible to get the colour right - blueish-purple not just purple. That said, I prefer the look of your bluebells to mine.

Sorry to disagree with you Bill. I much prefer yours. Rocco's strike me as too saturated and the whole scene somewhat unnatural. But then, what do I know ;)

Bill

I really like your photograph. I'm not sure which version I prefer, but I know I'd go for the darker ground if it was mine.

Like you, I don't normally do flowers, but below is one I did of my daughter's latest collection...

This is a photo of some Aqualegia's, though clearly not of the 'Granny's Bonnet' variety. I saw this as a B&W, and the potential to mimic those photos of fireworks exploding in the sky

Not traditional, but very effective, Bill!
