Canon 5100 vs Canon 6300 printer
« on: May 13, 2011, 11:27:48 am »

Would appreciate feedback from anyone with practical, hands on experience regarding the Canon 5100 and Canon 6300 printers.

I'm considering a move to one of these printers.  The 5100 size and color gamut are fine for my use.  Is there enough improvement on the 6300 series printer, however, that it would be worth paying the extra money and going for that over the 5100?

Thank you.

I am too, seriously looking at the 6300 test print turned up today, though not the best image to show but print was impressive.

I am also interested in ink usage cost, and how it handles not being used for a few weeks, maybe a month at a time.

what sort of paper usage people use, and where to get refills to gauge a cost for refills.

I have the 5100 and the 8300. I was actually going to get the 6300 but given the rebates jumped to the 8300. They're basically identical machines though.

The biggest reason for swapping for me is increased paper size (24" vs 17"), especially if doing canvas work. Sure, the inks are newer in the 6300, and the accounting app is nice, but for me it was about size.

The 5100 has been out long enough it's gotta be getting close to end-of-life from Canon's perspective (anyone with more insider knowledge here care to comment?). If I were spending the money today I'd go for the 6300 to get the newer inks, newer technology inside (the printers look the same outside but the innards are different), and 24" paper support.

LUCIA EX (6300) has wider gamut, better scratch reststance, lower gloss differential and bronzing, better dmax, evennes and smoother gradations.

The ipf6300 and 8300 are just fine being left alone in the corner of the room turned on. The inks agitate every once and a while (which always scares the poo out of me when I'm alone in the office). There was a recent thread on sources for ink in the US, but basically they're all the same price regardless of where you go.

They sip inks though. I will be shocked when I go through my first cartridge on the 8300.

The 6300 is a whole generation of technology ahead of the 5xxx series. Better and finer print heads, better inkset, better design... etc. The 6300 is current and up to date, the 5100 is long overdue for a replacement model.
