Are external microphone sockets universal?
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:18:35 pm »

When I bought my GH2/14-140, the Panasonic external stereo mike was bundled with the package as a special offer - will this also fit the external microphone socket on my 5D2?

The answer seems to be no. Canon needs a microphone with a 3.5mm plug, Panasonic is 2.5mm.

does that work in reverse? i.e. can you adapt a 2.5mm jack with a 3.5mm adaptor?

Yes, you can get a Stereo MicroJack to Stereo Mini Plug.

Don't forget that the GH2 uses a 4 pole 2.5mm connctor and shares it between the Mic and the remote control.
You need to check the connections on a 3.5 to 2.5 converter.

I've had no issues what-so-ever using a 2.5mm (male) to 3.5mm (female) adaptor on my GH2. It should not be necessary though as the whole idea of going for a 2.5mm is based on getting us to buy into the Panasonic external mike over other better designs. But I use an external recorder (SD702) for proper sound anyway as the Audio part of GH2 is not comparable to the video quality it produces.
