Canon 580EXII External Power Questions
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:12:45 am »

I recently picked up a 580EXII.
Before this I had been using a 550, and for external power, a Digitalcamerabattery brand 30Watt cell and the dcbz cable. This was a great solution, allowing for very fast recycle times.

It appears that Digitalcamerabattery as a company is gone. Their website is still up (which surprises me) but the links to their store are gone and there is no answer on their phone or to emails. Digital Camera Battery.

Does anyone know if the DCBZ cable will work with the 580EXII? On the website, Digital camera battery shows a different cable for the 580EX, one that fits into the battery compartment. I am wondering if the older cable will still work.

Also, does anyone know if the Quantum CZ2 cable will work with the Digitalcamerabattery? They appear to have the same plug pinouts.

From checking with Quantum, their Turbo SC and CZ2 or CZ cable should work, but I really don't want to have to purchase the Turbo SC.

Thanks
Paul Caldwell

I have no idea about the cable, but I will report that the 8-AA cell external pack that Canon sells for the 580EXII works pretty well. When I stuff both flash and battery pack with freshly charged NiMH cells, they'll provide quick recycle for the entirety of a long event. I don't think they cost more than $125 or $150, though of course the NiMH cells are extra.
