Northern New Mexico
« on: May 10, 2011, 01:39:49 pm »

I'm planning a 1 week trip to northern New Mexico in July. I'll be staying in Red River with my wife, 4 grandchildren and 2 other adults. I'm looking for suggestions for interesting day trips in the area as well as photographic sites I shouldn't miss. Thanks for your commnets.

i think there is still a trout hatchery  ( red river fish hatchery) on 515 off of 522/38 ( the road that runs from the north side of Taos around the mountains towards Red River area). Wasn't much there, but interesting.
Taos Pueblo comes to mind, canyon of the Rio Grande bridge and there is a nice BLM area in the gorge on 570 ( at Pilar)  off of 68 s of Taos

Also the Wild Rivers area to the north of Taos.
There is a steam railroad in Alamosa CO, just to the north  - Rio Grande scenic railroad, Great Sand dunes Nat'l Park just NE of Alamosa
Santa Fe has the  museum of New Mexico, Wheelwright museum of the american indian, the Loretto Chapel, the plaza, OKeefe art museum, a great library for kids when the adults need a rest and A/C.

Does Mesa Verde National Park count as "Northern New Mexico"?   It's great.

I second the recommendation for Chaco Canyon.

How about Bisti Badlands and Chaco Canyon?
I emphatically second both of these suggestions.

Chaco, the Bisti and Mesa Verde are not very close to Red River.

Cimarron Canyon State Park is a very easy trip, nice river winding through a fairly narrow canyon with interesting rock cliffs.

In the extended day trip category, State Road 378 from Cerro on south goes along the edge of the Taos Gorge.  Haven't done this one in quite a while, but I remember some killer views.  You might want to check with the locals for the current condition of the road.

Too bad you won't be there in autumn, the roads through Eagle Nest and Angel Fire are spectacular then.

You will be 100 miles south of Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado.  I visited it one day a few years ago while my family skied at Taos.  I loved it.  Great dune photo possibilities.  It is unique among the US dune locations because it is high in the mountains.

Define close? They are close enough in my opinion. They are only a few hours away. Abiquiu is where Georgia Okeefe lived with interesting scenery.

For me either, but I live here and am used to killer long days driving and shooting as this is how I make my living at this since 1978. I once drove to Yellowstone-took one photograph, that I had been stalking for a while, then turned around and drove home because I had to be at work. I once drove all night to Vegas for a commercial shoot and then shot a 12 hour day. Of course I was ten years younger then. I'm not sure I could do that now.

Each of those sites are what roughly-Chaco is 5 hours, Bisti slightly more, MV maybe 4-away from RR? RR is kind of in an out of the way part of NM. Abiquiu is not too far-only about 2 hours away. When I am with my family and trying to do some serious shooting (snap shots are a whole different scenario), I might be able to get away for an afternoon or morning unless they are into the day trip too (my grandkids are too young for such). I am always looking for the sweet light in the early morning or late afternoon. Chaco would require a looonng day (that dirt road will suck this time of year) unless you are happy with mid-day shooting (which I don't recommend there the light is too flat-the same with the Bisti). Abiquiu the same in my opinion. Some structures at Mesa Verde can and should be shot at midday. Additionally the Bisti will require some walking to get into good visual territory,

I try not to combine serious shooting with family vacations-there are just too many demands and compromises, but if I can get away for an afternoon or morning, I don't want to waste all that time driving.

Some of the suggestions above are much better IMO.

I Wouldn't consider Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, or Bisti to be day-trips from Red River.

Here are a few locations to consider that are nearby and in order of their distance/time from Red River:

  • Wild Rivers Recreation Area, near Cerro
  • Valle Vidal
  • Taos Pueblo
  • Rio Grande Gorge
  • San Francisco de Asis Church in Ranchos de Taos
  • La Cueva Mill / Salman Ranch
  • High Road to Taos including the churches of San Jose de Gracia and El Santuario de Chimayo
  • Great Sand Dunes
  • Santa Fe
  • Plaza Blanca aka The White Place
  • Ghost Ranch
  • Pecos National Historical Park

I'll probably think of a few more.

Thats a great list. I would add broad vistas looking East and South from the top of Capulin Crater late in the day. Also Fort Union.
