PhotoKit Sharpener 2 remark...
« on: April 27, 2011, 05:56:37 pm »

Recently found myself needing to send out 30x40 prints to Durst Theta 76 printer...read and reread my manual but finally went with Contone 300 for my final output sharpening as that was the specific pixel res I had prepared the files to...felt nervous because I couldn't really see the changes on my monitors at 100 % I thought in the middle of the night...I just took delivery on them and they are stunning! Thank you Pixel "Genies" !!
Patricia

Would welcome being pointed to where I could learn more in depth about this than the one page in the manual...thank you

Here's one book, which is quite a bit more than one page. It is widely considered the bible of sharpening, authored by Schewe with the late Bruse Fraser. I believe PKS is based on the learnings from the book.

Thank you...I went right to the site, only to be informed that I had already purchased the book on October 3, 2009 ! Doesn't it figure...I knew then I needed the guidance, and went to the right source, but it has somehow disappeared off my library shelf... so I re-ordered...hope Jeff benefits by my "lending" policy :)  PS Only 9 copies left there...

:)

Which sadly I would suggest NOT getting because at this point I don't like the Kindle versions limited ability to see images optimally. For the text it's fine but not the images :~(

BTW, I'm glad your stuff came out great!

It would make Bruce happy...

Not sure if this is the right place, but I just want to say that I love Photokit sharpener.  Thank you to Bruce, Jeff and everyone else who made it available.

It's a cornerstone of my workflow - both for digital camera files and film scans. Nothing else like it.

Jeff - does that apply to the Kindle app for the iPad (in terms of image fidelity), or is it a physical limitation of the Kindle?  I was thinking about picking up an electronic copy for my iPad, so your remarks are timely.

I don't have knowledge of the iPad version so I can't say...I do know that the problem is "seeing" what it is that is in the screenshots when made so much smaller than the 300 PPI printed images in the book. I was pretty careful making sure that the printed images would repro in halftone to show what I was writing about. I have no idea how the publisher converted the print PDF's to Kindle but I've been told it was sub-optimal. Whether or not the iPad version is better, I don't know.

Fair enough.  I might give a go, anyway, as it's a handy reference and I can always refer to the printed copy in need.  I'll post up about how it looks.

The full text on Amazon´s site says "Only 8 left in stock--order soon (more on the way). "
So this does not look like the end of the world as we know it..

The basic information is covered very clearly in the superb User Manual, which, if I remember correctly, can be downloaded for free from the Pixel Genius website.

I don't think the manual is available without the program. But new users can download a seven day demo and that should include the user manual.

So it is. Now why didn't I find that when I went directly to their website? (No need to answer that question! :-)  )

I've found out it's generally much easier to find things by googling them than figuring out what each webmaster thought would be the most (il)logical place to hide content in. UIs for each website are different, but google treats them all the same (mostly).

For example, good luck finding a phone number for eBay customer service by trying to navigate their site, while one can find it within seconds by googling. edit: although the reason it's hard to find is probably intentional...

Good point. Effective web site design is really nice to have when you land on it.
