64 bit CMM from Adobe... iPF printing
« on: April 20, 2011, 05:52:46 pm »

There has been a response to the  'where is the 64 bit version of the Adobe CMM?' question at photoshop.com

It would help my use of the Canon iPF print plugin when working in 64 bit.

Seems that Adobe want some reasons to create it...  so if you'd find it of use, please leave a comment on this thread

I know that people have been asking about this for some time, and this is one of the first times i've seen a response from Adobe.

Another ipf8300 owner with 64 bit hardware yes Adobe, let's do it.   I've added my 'like' to photoshop.com.

Why not convert to the output space with ACE and then send through the driver with No Color management?

I’ve got a 64-bit Mac version for my iPF6300, it seems to work. Is it the CMM not being Adobe that’s a concern here?

I'm just learning the ropes and was unaware that ACE Convert To Profile was an option.  Not as convenient maybe but seems like it ought to work in the absence 64 bit CMM.

Details here for anyone who needs a refresher:  http://www.colormanagementinfo.com/page1/page11/page11.html

Yup, just use Convert to Profile and select ACE.

But the question is, why hasn’t Canon implemented a CMM with BPC? Its not a unique feature of ACE although Adobe did bring BPC to everyone’s attention. You can ask Adobe to code ACE for 64-bit, maybe they will spend the money to do this FOR Canon. Or Canon could just roll their own CMM with BPC, which isn’t an Adobe only technology.

Well, Adobe Released the CMM specifically for use by other applications, so I don't really think it's unreasonable for Canon to use it. And I kinda of like the reassurance that I'm going to get consistent results from the Adobe Engine, rather than having to worry about whether a custom-rolled engine from Canon would produce identical results.

Converting within Photoshop is certainly an option, but it's more tedious (and you better be sure you don't answer "yes" when Photoshop prompts you to save your document unless you want that profile permanently baked into your image).

I have no details about the internal relationship between ACE and the Adobe standalone CMM; but since Adobe obviously has 64-bit versions of the CMM routines, one would hope it shouldn't be too much trouble to produce a 64-bit version of the standalone CMM.
