Changing interface plates on digital backs?
« on: April 20, 2011, 03:06:37 pm »

Total newb question, but is it possible to swap interface plates on digital backs?  Say a Phase One w/ Mamiya interface, changing it out to a Contax interface?

It is not possible to change the interface plate on a Phase One back as you can with certain other brands like the Sinar.

Phase One has a service called a "Platform Swap". If your back is under the Value Added Warranty you can have your whole digital back swapped out to a different mount one time during the warranty period. If your back is under the Classic Warranty or out of Warranty Phase One charges a fee of $3000.

It is best to contact a Phase One reseller to check whether the back you are considering doing a Platform Swap is a)still under VA warranty if it ever was and b) that a swap has not already been completed. We do this as a courtesy service for people considering a Platform Swap often. All we need is the serial number.

Hope this helps.

That's a big help.  Getting a Contax 645 to shoot film and I wanted to have rental digital backs avail but can't seem to find any in the LA area.  Talked to Calumet and he mentioned getting a Contax interface plate to have on hand because they're getting a lot of requests for Contax backs.  Figured it might be cool to do this on my own but not quite possible.  Anyone have a good lead on renting digital backs for Contax?

We have a P65+ Contax for rent right now. We also have a variety of Contax backs come in and out as we upgrade our user base to other backs.

I guess that Calumet was not referring to a PhaseOne back that they would maybe stock a plate???? We do have a rental program as well in which we assist  photographers across the United States, and have a P65+ currently available as well. If you do choose to rent, some if not all of those fees can be applied towards a purchase of a digital back.

The Contax is an excellent platform. Enjoy it for film and hopefully one day you will have the opportunity to add a digital back to it.
