3880 - ABW print to screen match
« on: April 19, 2011, 09:06:37 pm »

I bought and setup and test printed a 3880 today using Exhibition Fibre.
I did my B/W conversions in PS.
My B/W prints using Eric Chan's profile/s are a little too dark.
I entered his recommended media Type & Tone setting.
I tried a few Neutrals and also a Warm.

My monitor is calibrated (eye-one/i1).

Shall I overide the default Brightness slider, or perhaps change the Tone from Darker to Dark or even to Normal.
Any tips or links on how best to work with ABW ?

Well in PS I have:
Perceptual. PS manages Col. Printer profile is his ABW profile for the paper.

Then I have the media Type he recoomended for the profile.
ABW print mode.
I tried Neutral & Warm Tone.
I tried 1440 & 2880 Res.
High Speed & Finest Detail Off
All the sliders under Advanced at 0
Tone darker (as he recommended) and I have tried Dark (better)
Under Advanced Media Control the Gap=Wide and Thickness 4 (Epson Exhibition Fibre)

What else can I tell you ?
I think that's it?

I don't remember. I'll run it again in the morning.
I think it was 120 cd/m2

Targets: Native White Point
2.2
120 cd/m2

Isn't it more likely that if my monitor were set too bright (too high a cd/2) then the prints would dark?
But having it set at 120 is not like that - correct ?

I quickly just made two small col prints and they seem to print pretty close to the screen images. Maybe a tad darker but not nearly as significantly darker as the B/W prints via ABW and Eric's profile

What are you using for your viewing light?

To get the print to "match" the screen you need to view the print in a light that makes the paper white as bright as the screen white. That means about 500 lux (same as a well-lit office) for a screen set to 120 cd/m2.

I have an Ott viewing light (daylight) and some tungsten and using my i1 calibration tool as a col temp meter,  I can mix them and get the col temperature pretty close to the ideal D50 (4800/5000K) area. Certainly enough to judge B/W print density, if not critical col.

I just re-calibrated the monitor and see that it is about 5% off on Brightness although I've cranked it up all the way.
If the actual brightness is 5% less than my target would this be the reason that the prints look darker than on screen?
Other than upgrading the monitor, is there a workaround to compensate - like perhaps lightening the middle levels slider on an adj layer?

My calibration looks like this:
Col Temp:
Target - Native
Current 6000K

Gamma:
Target 2.2
Current 2.2

Luminance:
Target 120cd/m2 (lcd recommended)
Current 116 cd/m2

Ambient Light:
Col temp 4900K
Illuminance 23 Lux

Viewing area ambient light (Varies depending on how close I hold the print from the source):
Col Temp 5100K
Illuminance 534 Lux

Frank

This a common problem and there has been previous discussion in the LR Section. In my case I found that Eric's profiles sorted it, so I'm not sure why they don't work for you. My link -
