Totally frustrated with printing
« on: April 17, 2011, 06:39:49 pm »

A few years back, I was able to print beautiful prints from Photoshop, using an Epson 4000 and 2200.  I then got a Canon IPF 6100, and struggled with learning the processes and different dialog boxes, but using the export module was able to produce nice prints.  Then Adobe "improved" Photoshop to CS5, and Apple changed over to Leopard.  Now, nothing works, except the Canon export module.  I cannot print from my Epson 2200 without double profiling, because there appears to be no way to turn off printer color management.  I tried printing from CS4 and from Preview, but neither of those work either.  I am using an intel  Mac Pro and OS X 10.5.8.  Research indicates that printing was "broken" in CS5, and things are not much better with Snow Leopard and CS5 and Epson.

What is the current solution?   Are the new Epson printers compatible with CS5?  Should I stay with Canon?  The export module works but I could never get the same control as with the Epson software, when it worked with Photoshop.  Seems the majority of members here use Epson, so I'm hoping things are not as difficult as they appear to me now.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance on how to get up and running again.  (BTW, most of my printing is wildlife, portrait, or landscape, on Epson Premium Lustre).

Thanks so much for any help on this.....

Not true...the CS5 print pipeline is different than previous versions yes. But it's not broken.

You do however need to be absolutely sure you've installed ALL of the driver updates for the printers and not just the Apple provided drivers either. Be sure to update the drivers and run any additional updates available from the printer's web site.

Thanks. I've tried that, with no luck.  It may be because the 2200 is no longer supported by Epson?  I read that, but don't know if it is accurate.

Here is the question: With current Epson printers, can you turn off printer color management and print without problems directly from CS5?  Is Snow Leopard required to do that?

Many thanks.

I think the problem I'm experiencing was described in Mark Dubuvoy's article from November 2009 titled:   Solving Recent Profiling Issues With Apple Computers Epson Printers and Photoshop:http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/solving.shtml.

I'm wondering if the workaround described in the article is no longer needed.

Did you go to the Epson web site and download ALL of the updates? Including the Common Updater v7.00 and the 8.12 driver? If not, you're gonna have problems because the Apple update driver is the limited driver version that disables the ability to turn off color management in the driver. You'll need to remove the current 2200 printer in Printers and Faxes, install the driver, install the v7.00 updates and then re-add your printer.

That's completely unrelated to the OP's issue...the OP needs to fully and completely updates everything related to Epson in order to print using a proper color managed workflow. What Mark was talking about was printing out printer profile targets, not general printing. Don't confuse the two issues...

Found a solution.  If I open CS5 in 32 bit, all is perfect. Just printed out a portrait with color near perfect match to what is on the monitor.  I am not sure why this is, or if I am giving up any quality by printing in 32 bit, but it sure is nice to have my workflow back.

Len,

For the Canon iPf 6100 see http://canonipf.wikispaces.com/
I have my 6100 printing happily with 10.6.6, CS5 (64 bit) and LR3, notwithstanding the issues when printing under Snow Leopard, with the help from this wiki. Feel free to post there, they even have collected the Canon iPf related threads from this forum.
And, as Jeff states, make sure your drivers are really up to date.

Hope this helps, you should be able to get the 6100 printing properly under Snow Leopard and CS5.

Thanks, I will check the Canon wiki again, haven't been there in a while.  Much appreciated.
