midday birdie
« on: April 13, 2011, 08:34:19 pm »

So unoriginal is what I'm thinking

Is this worth doing?
I find myself at the crossroads of chasing every small opportunity
or thoughtfully composing images.  I'm still just learning, this is my second full year of everyday shooting-
I of course prefer running around the countryside with a song in my heart
people are usually thrilled or so if I give them a print-
I can't tell you how many people have junk like this hanging on their walls of stuff I just happened to come upon in my travels & frame it after I give it to them.
A few at least.
It was what made me start charging sometimes-
I appreciate the honor, but baby needs ink! (oh and some fine art rag!)
So what about it-
is this the most boring photo you've seen?
Thank you

It's certainly not the most boring photo I've ever seen: I have only to fire up my own copy of LR to find many that leave it in the dust in that race.

That said, it's pretty much what I would term a "so what" shot. Yes, it's a bird. It's a pretty bird but it's a shame it's sitting on a rather unattractive wire fence (unless, of course, you wanted to show it in a human context, in which case it's not a shame). I can't really see what it has in its beak. Its chest feathers look as if they're blown but that might be just the jpeg conversion. The background is nicely blurred.

So, I'd be reasonably content that I'd taken it and I'd keep it but I wouldn't print, still less frame it.

FWIW

Thanks Jeremy,
yeah-
I've got a million perfect setting/backdrop/subject photos.
I don't like them as much as a quirky presentation
I put up that fence to keep the goats out of her nest-
her babies didn't make it-
the goats smashed down the fence, got stuck in the enclosure I made- they
could get in but not out.
Oh well the nest is gone the goats don't care and I'm rather broken hearted over the events.
I after all built the enclosure on the bird's nesting grounds.
I feel terrible for not having tried harder to keep her safe.
Count goats among the most destructive of gods creatures
I do think you're right about the clarity and highlights.
I've been working on cracking midday lighting issues.
thank you

If it was mine I would add some contrast to darken it a little and add a vignette. The light is too even across the image imo. As to the merits I think Jeremy summed it up. 8)

I think this is typical of lots of my images. It means something special to you (based on your story) and is an important image to you because of that. But not so much to other people. Cherish it for yourself and don't worry about pleasing others. Keep it and print it.
