Travel to Vermont / New Hampshire in June
« on: April 10, 2011, 08:54:48 am »

Hello all,

I am new here but hoping some people can give advice where to go in Vermont / New Hampshire? I am going to be travelling in the area at end of June for about a weeks time. Will be looking for camping areas, good hiking trails (with good scenery of course!  ;D ) Looking for photography locations that are good to go to.

Thank you all for any feedback.

Best,

My advice is to bring alot of bug goop or you'll get sucked dry!!

My favorite area is around Mt. Washington.

Certainly the NH White mountains area and its miles of hiking trails, but  don't overlook the North Country especially along the Androscoggin River north of Berlin.  Route 1a is a scenic drive along the entire seacoast of NH, lots of 200 plus year old architecture in Portsmouth and best dining north of Boston. For just wandering around, southwest NH is like a trip back  150 years. See Hancock, Harrisville, Francestown, etc, hike  and camp Mt. Monadnock.

White Mtns are full of waterfalls:

The Greens are not quite as photogenic but VT but there are some natural water slides and a couple of great quarry tours:

Heed the warning about blackflys though, June is a killer

June is the time of the Lupine Bloom...there is a huge Lupine festival in NH, just search NH Lupine Festival, and it will give you info...also, check GIS for photos to give you ideas, but the landscape possibilities are definately there. Also the waterfalls...

Hello everyone!!

Thank you so much for the warnings of black flies... I've been there before up in Ontario's northern parts! Lots of great suggestions and I was going to spread the trip around but decided to stick to the White Mountains area for the time being...

Booked at Fraconia Notch for 3 days as it looks like a good base camp to go out from. Anybody done the Cog train? Is it worth it?

So going to start out on the Monday or Tuesday from Guelph, ON to Burlington VT and then drive through to Barre, VT and on to the White Mountains on Thursday.

Found good sites for diner food and small town local eats that are great too. So can't wait!
I'll be lugging along my old but trusty 40D and 50 mm / 18-124 mm lens.

Cheers!

If you are going to Barre, there is a very interesting Cemetary there if you are into that sort of thing. Scuptors at the nearby quarry made special headstones for their family and friends and it has sort of taken off. I spent an age meandering around there.

Check it out here:

Also there is the Flume and The Basin in New Hampshire. I had a lovely hike around the Flume. The stairs are put up each spring and taken down in fall.

I hope that this helps. Have a good trip

You may want to have a look at the link below to a photographers site that does a photography guide. I found it very useful in helping me to find good locations. I wasn't much into just repeating the shots in the book but having a quick guide to good locations saved me much valuable time on my holiday. Some were a little out of date  but overall it was very useful.

I live in NH, grew up in White Mountains.  The flume and basin are great. Hike Artists' Bluff right at the base of Cannon, that's a great view for little work.  Take the tram up Cannon, some good views from up there.  The cog railway is ok, but you can also drive up Washington for cheaper and more flexibility.

Just south of Franconia, is Lincoln, and the Kancamaugus highway. That's a great road, very scenic, lots of waterfalls and trails. I'd take that over to Conway and stop at all the spots along the way. Much to see on that road. It's spectacular in fall but good in the summer too.

Enjoy!
