Well the new i1 Profiler Photo Pro is released and I am now more undeceided then before. After viewing the i1 spectro and Profiler software package I am not sure that their is anything remotely close to the $1000 difference in value between it and the Munki? I have no interest in sitting here spending hours replacing oem profiles that generally are more then adequate. That being said I still need more then my standard colorimiter for some of the work we do here. I would like to be able to do an occasional profile  for my metal prints or medias that do not come with any profiles. Plus having one for workshops would be invaluable. A million words have been spoken about the comparisons of the Munki and i1. Is the Munki like using a timing light to tune up your car when you should really have the computerized tune up machine (i1 Profiler)? I have probably answered my own question unless I am not putting enough emphasis on the new profilers software?

This is a hard one for many people! Is it worth ponying up major cash for a professional solution when today's consumer solutions are pretty good? The final image quality is a little better than the Munki primarily because of the perceptual rendering controls. Some people need profile editing features that i1P doesn't have yet so they should continue using their existing pro software until i1P has these features. Keep in mind that remote profiling services fill the gap for people that want top notch quality but can't justify the expense of purchasing and maintaining pro level equipment.

Unless you could get a generous sidegrade discount from Munki, I don’t see why you’d spend more money assuming you are telling us the current solution works and you don’t need any additional capability.

Now if you wanted to build profiles from larger patch samples, or build CMYK profiles, or if the current settings for your RGB profiles (perceptual table) needed more options, that’s a different story. But it sounds like you are saying, it ain’t broke. So don’t worry about fixing it.

Some people need profile editing features that i1P doesn't have yet so they should continue using their existing pro software until i1P has these features.

IF they build anything like either legacy solution, we’re in trouble. Profile Editor in ProfileMaker Pro could make your head explode. The editor in PROFILER was kind of toy like.

Where’s Kodak’s Custom Color ICC when we need it?

X-Rite should put profile editing way back on the back burner until they fix the issues and UI warts in v1.

I hear that! If they're going to do it right then it's going to take time and some deep thought. More importantly they've got higher priority things to address beforehand. It's painful to have waited so long and to find out we'll have to wait longer but wait we must do. At least there's a solid new forward thinking platform upon which they can grow.

Thank-you Andrew and Scott for your honest opinions on this v1 of i1Profiler. I had planned on purchasing this product but because of a number of issues discussed here can not see forking out that much for such a restrictive and unfinished package. I guess I'll wait until the dust settles as my current package, the Munki, works well for me, limitations and all.

Regards,

Dave
