Avatar original for Patricia Sheley

Patricia asked me a question in a separate message about the avatar I've been using. I shot it in Can Tho, Vietnam, in 1965. The kid was playing on a ledge inside a playhouse. I've included the original, which, Ha! is cropped. Why? Because I was on the street in a jeep with a Leica and a 50mm f/2 Summicron and there wasn't time to get close enough. I've also included a second shot from a different day when the kid was in the playhouse with her brothers. Unfortunately the new software insists on a square avatar, so the avatar is a bit distorted.

Navigating unexpected currents in life, if I'm lucky, allows me to pull up on photographic resting places, as for example the B&W Paul Caponigro's (upcoming show in Maine, " The Hidden Presence of Places" ) and quiet time with work recently noted/pondered, (the "street" of RSL)

The consistent tone of sensibility, quiet, modest truth of moment, leitmotifs appearing in his shared work but from a physical point of view different from that of the Vietnam avatar had me wondering how intentional his POV impulse and how he viewed the POV. It is with appreciation for his thoughts in a separate message that I now realize how much for Russell it is rooted in his determination not to disturb/disrupt/intrude or change the moment, but (as an artist) to swiftly record it's florescence.

Inspiring community we share here at LuLa. And thank you Russell...

Thank you, Russ, for showing us that fine portrait big enough to appreciate it. And thanks to Patricia for pushing Russ into posting it for us here.

Both of these images glow with honesty and sensitivity. Fine work.

Eric

P.S. Perhaps I can try to paraphrase what I think of as Russ's attitude to cropping:
1. Don't do it without a really good reason, and
2. "I think maybe there might be a picture here if i can only find it by cropping" is NOT a good reason.
