Lightroom 4 to be rebranded Photoshop CS6?
« on: March 29, 2011, 03:42:40 pm »

Apparently, the hand writing is on the wall and Lightroom 4 is scheduled to be re-branded Photoshop CS6 and the "new Photoshop" will be branded Adobe ImageReady.

Just when you thought things were settling down - so I guess now the former LR 4 will surely have soft proofing!

All you have to do is read the 2nd paragraph to see whoever wrote this needs to do some checking on facts!

Photoshop started out as a general purpose graphics program in the late 1980's.

Only if 1st quarter 1990 was part of the late 1980’s.

BTW, that splash screen is totally bogus, you’ll find that a number of people listed on it haven’t worked for Adobe in awhile.

I may have fallen victim of an April fools prank, but the authors apparently did their homework, if Wikipedia is correct!

"In 1987, Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. This program, called Display, caught the attention of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended Thomas turn it into a fully-fledged image editing program. Thomas took a six month break from his studies in 1988 to collaborate with his brother on the program, which had been renamed ImagePro.[3] Later that year, Thomas renamed his program Photoshop and worked out a short-term deal with scanner manufacturer Barneyscan to distribute copies of the program with a slide scanner; a "total of about 200 copies of Photoshop were shipped" this way.[4]

During this time, John traveled to Silicon Valley and gave a demonstration of the program to engineers at Apple and Russell Brown, art director at Adobe. Both showings were successful, and Adobe decided to purchase the license to distribute in September 1988.[3] While John worked on plug-ins in California, Thomas remained in Ann Arbor writing program code. Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990 for Macintosh exclusively.[5]"

So about 200 copies of Photoshop was shipped in 1988, and Adobe Photoshop 1.0 was shipped in 1990.

Only if 1st quarter 1990 was part of the late 1980’s.

No, 200 copies of Barneyscan XP were shipped...the application we now call Photoshop wasn't actually named Photoshop until Adobe couldn't find a better name for it (they tried real hard). John Knoll named it PhotoHut (and I have the application icons to prove it).

Photoshop's official birthday is Feb 19th, 1990 (even if the gestation started in 1987).

Jeff

You should update Wiki so the record is set straight.

The official release of Photoshop was February 1990 (I got my copy in April or May).
200 copies of Barneyscan were released (but it wasn’t Photoshop). My dear friend, the late Bruce Fraser had one such copy.

That was good. He (Bob Johnson) posts an April Fools entry every year as I recall, and every year he leaves a number of folks red-faced. Last year it was the introduction of the new Nikon D4.1.

So isn’t the idea to post such nonsense information ON April Fools day?

That's how I noticed it was a hoax.
Some of the names didn't appear in the list of TOPPS Adobe bubble gum cards for 2011. :D

It is sooo essential to keep abreast on the Pixel Glitterati.
