I have to agree with planning bit.  Traveling around the western states, Google Earth and (especially) Acme Mapper w/it's 'topo' function are irreplaceable tools that will benefit anyone who might employ them.

One of my favourite sayings.   the other is the 6 P's !     

Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance

It certainly holds true.  But a good plan often also includes good flexibility,  not just locked down,  this is especially true for landscape photography IMO !
