A 50 inch aluminum ruler and a Stanley handheld cutter.
Or do you mean to cut along 7 feet?

I bought a 54" Rotatrim rotary cutter, thinking it would be ideal for both photo paper and canvas. Originally, while it cut photo paper with ease, it wouldn't cut canvas at all. They replaced the rotary cutting wheel and that did the trick. However, it seems to cut the reverse side of the canvas much easier than the printed/laminated side, making its usefulness somewhat limited. So ... for the most part I am back to my trusty Olfa scalpel. However, I just got that nifty little canvas cutting shown in the BC gallery wrap video. The tool is actually from the IG Wrap folks (who make the gallery wrap kits) and it works pretty good. It is made of plastic or nylon with a replaceable Olfa blade. Part of the canvas is fed into a slot and the tool is designed to be butted-up against their gallery wrap bars or some sort of straight-edge as a cutting guide. I used it last weekend on a 24 x 36 gallery wrap and it worked just fine in terms of trimming the excess canvas to fit around the bars.

If it fits in the Rotatrim, that's where it goes. If it's coming off my Epson 9800, I simply use cheap scissors purchased on sale at the box home improvement store. For any cutting where the edge isn't critical, I'll still use those scissors.

If I'm cutting the length of the piece, I simply put cardboard on the floor and use my 48-inch straight-edge and use a single-edge razor blade. When it's longer than 48-inches, I simply cut about the length of the straight-edge, then move it the next length to cut the next section. It's not fast, but it seems to work.

What we used to do to split the web at the newspaper years ago when the paper was too wide was to put a box cutter or single-edge blade in the path and let the paper go by and split itself length-wise. But that was years ago and this was newsprint, not canvas.

On the printer, a Stanley knife along the edge. Outside the printer a 5' board cutter. Above that length: mounted Bosch rotary cutter and an aluminium profile to guide the canvas edge, working from roll to roll. A bit crude in its design still but improving. Use that too for paper, printed or unprinted.

met vriendelijke groeten, Ernst

For long cuts I use a heavy straight edge and an Olfa rotary cutter, usually available from fabric shops. I've used a box cutter but find the rotary cutter superior. My Rotatrim does an excellent job, but it's only a 30" model.

works like a charm.

There's a bigger version http://www.olfa.co.jp/en/body/detail/102.html if you want a better handhold.
