Great Falls after Passaic River Flooding
« on: March 14, 2011, 06:24:49 pm »

I was at the Great Falls in Paterson, NJ, one of my favorite spots to shoot.  The Passaic River put about 4 feet of water into the streets in Little Falls, and the Great Falls were more turbulent than I have ever seen.  The bridge is for seeing the falls from the top, and the old building is a very old power station converting hydro power to electricity.

Comments welcome.

It is nice to see water looking like water - what shutter speed did you use? ...and what ISO did you need to get it?

I think that, for many water shots, tilt can give DOF at high shutter speeds in deep, dark ravines.

I decided that frezzing most of the water motion would convey the turbulence better than a more traditional "silky" look.  Light in the foreground was not great, so I cranked the ISO up to 400 and set the aperture for f/11.  The shutter speed was 1/640.  The silky look in the background was more from mist rather than moving water.

The camera is my still useful 1DMkii.  The lens was the Tamron 28-300 with image stabilization.  Within its limitations, I like it as much as my "L" lenses.

The famous falls from The Sopranos. Nice shot. Did you go to Libby's for a hot dog with their secret sauce?
