Sinar Capture Shop and Shading Mode
« on: March 08, 2011, 07:23:47 am »

Anyone is using the new Capture Shop version?
I'm looking for the Shading mode feature which was present with Exposure 7 and really useful for landscape and architectural shots.

There is something similar in Capture Shop? I need it when using CF cards... Usually in Exposure I download the DNGs, then correct them with my LCC plexi shots and use them in C1 or LR3...
I didn't find a similar help in Capture Shop 6...

Thanks!

Rob

Isn't the 'white reference' under the 'Capture' menu what you're looking for?

Thanks Graham, it'ok if I'm working tethered... but how to make CS6 see the images as shade references when they are on the card? I can download them but not correct them as I was doing with Exposure. I'm not using always the laptop and I need reference shots for every shifting movement I do with the view camera.

Hi Rob,

I have mentioned this to Sinar and they recognise it is missing from CaptureShop, but I can't remember if they told me if a solution is planned or if they consider using eXposure the workaround for this. Imho it seems the future of Sinar is with tethered-only backs, which have no screen, so maybe a shading mode in CaptureShop is not a priority. The eMotion backs and eXposure software were originally Jenoptik products, rebadged as Sinar, and now that relationship is over I imagine Sinar will be sticking to what they know and do so well, which is specialising in high end studio capture hardware.

Thanks Ben, I have received right now an email from Sinar.

They say the Shading Mode feature will be inplemented in the next CS version. Right now they told me to use Exposure 7.0.5.

Let's hope so!

Regards

Rob

Shading mode is the way Sinar calls LCC lens color calibration (as you find in Capture One).

You take a reference shot with a white plexi before the image you need (with all shift, tilt, etc.) and then apply it to the right image. It corrects color issues when you work with view camera lenses (color casts, usually magenta and green in different part of the images) and MF lenses too (I'm using it with Contax 645 lenses and I find useful too). I use a lot this function in the field when I working without a laptop and saving images to the CF card. I think you can do the same reference shot with Capture Shop (in White Reference as Graham said) but actually not if you use CF cards...

What's the difference with the "Get White Reference" function of the Capture Shop program ?

With CaptureShop you have to shoot the white ref shots tethered. So if you go on location and shoot to CF card on one of the eMotion backs, with a tech camera with movements, you need to shoot a white ref with those specific movements to dial out the colour casts later. The colour cast varies depending on the camera movements (amount of tilt/shift/swing etc). eXposure has a system which can be applied later, so if you shoot your white ref shots immediately before your shots to which they need to be applied, you import them and tag them as a shading ref file in exposure, along with the subsequent shots that need to have them applied. You can't apply white shadings retrospectively like this in CaptureShop as far as I know. They have to be created and selected at the time of capture.

ditto...!

Also, I have also been told the same good news that it is coming in the next CS!  I'm happy with eXp.
