Epson 4880 maintenance tank
« on: March 05, 2011, 08:36:33 pm »

For an Epson 4880, it seems to be useful to fill the head cap assembly with distilled water and thereby soak the head with distilled water (or distilled water fumes!) to ameliorate clogging, as has been recommended in several places. The procedure inspires this question: How often can this be done? - won't the water drain into the maintenance tank without its volume being recognized?

I found with my 4800 that high humidity definitely mitigates clogging. A cup of water sitting inside the printer works fine, so you don't need much water on the capping assy to keep the head moist.  The maintenance tanks are generally far from being physically full when the printer says they are.  In other words, don't worry about it.  : )

One other thing: it's easy to just pull the maintenance tank and evaluate its fullness.  You can even weigh an empty for an accurate estimation.
