Architectural Photography as Fine Art Photography
« on: February 28, 2011, 04:40:13 pm »

I am doing research to find new and exiting photographers / artist working in the field of architectural photography.

Let me give you some examples of names who interest me:

Robert Polidori, Candida Höfer, Walter Niedermayr, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Edward Burtynsky etc as top world class artist who work with architectural photography.

Please add some more names in this category.

There is a lot of artist who is working in the field of architectural photography; this is what I have a special interest in.

Names like: Andreas Gefeller, Antje Hanebeck, Beatrice Minda, Bert Teunissen, Ferit Kuyas, Guido Guidi, John Offenbach, Michael Wolf, Sze Tsung Leong, Todd Hido.

Please add names to this list too.

I am most aware of top class architectural photographers like Richard Bryant, Hisao Suzuki, Roland Halbe, Helene Binet, they interest me a lot, but this is currently not what I am looking for.

I am of cause aware of the grand old men like Julius Shulman, Bernd Becher, Brasai, Walker Evans, the list is long, but I am looking for contemporary photographers.

I am not looking for commercial architectural photographers, but photographers who use architectural photography as an artistic expression to create personal work.

Thank you all,

TES

Hey guys, thanks.

Lynne Cohen

She has interesting work I will have to look into.

Axel Hutte, Lewis Baltz

Axel Hütte is a favorite, I have his books.

Lewis Baltz, somehow I never connected him to Architectural phptography, but he sure has some excellent work.
Is he a part of the New Topographic movement in America ?

Cheers

Depends on how you define AP and FAP. This is an area of particular interest to me also-both intellectually and in my own work. Here are some of my favorites past and present besides those mentioned above. Some are not "pure"  FAAPs but did some interesting work in that area. Bill Schwab, Ed Ranney, John Nickel, John Szarkowski, Aaron Siskind, Steve Sherman, Andreas Gefeller, Ed Richards, Morley Baer, Laura Gilpin, Mark Citret, Robert Polidori, Gabriele Basilco,

There is also some discussion about this on my blog-look through the index. Good luck.

Mark Power is excellent, I have his book 26 different endings, and the new "sound of two songs" on its way from amazon.

I will have to look into John Davies.

And not to forget two excellent german photographers, both still without huge international reputation - just a matter of time

Landscapes: Susanne Wegner
Architecture: Brigida Gonzalez (she uses 2 different pages ... Have a look at
3dminus1.de/ )

Hi Tes,

Per Bak Jensen is a fellow Dane! Very influential on contemporary Danish photography. I especially like some of his earlier work, such as the series "Den Gådefulde By" ( The Enigmatic City ).

Another Danish photographer worth looking at is Mads Gamdrup, who studied with Per Bak Jensen at the Art Academy in Copenhagen.
