using two existing lenses with a digital back
« on: February 26, 2011, 12:22:45 pm »

In looking into a technical camera, I have two lenses that I think would work on digital, a 72 Schneider XL and a 120 Super-Symar HM. I've used the 120 on an iExpress back and it seemed plenty sharp, but I had nothing to compare it
with.
Any opinions, experiences, on this, because it isn't cheap to adapt existing lenses to technical camera mounts.

Thanks.

I use a SCHNEIDER Super Angulon XL 72mm with my ALPA and a HASSELBLAD CFV-39 back .
The pixel size of this back is 6,8 µ and I obtain very good results with that lens .
This lens was used when I still shot 4x5 LF with film and I got it adapted for my ALPA .

I have not used this lens with a 6 µ or even smaller pixelsize back yet , but assume , that there will be a slight loss in
IQ due to required resolution .

I can not speak for the 120mm Super Symar but have used the APO-MACRO SIRONAR 120 as well as the APO-MACRO-SIRONAR digital 120 .
I did not find the digital version any better .

The above said is valid for my CFV-39 .
What back are you going to use ? ? ?

I would go for a Linhof 679cc camera, not becaurse i am selling one but because i had all alternatives and cam to the conclusion that no other camera comes even close to its performance. I had a 120 Super-Symar HM on it with a 528c and a CF39ms backbut never tried the 72mm.
Good luck.

I own both of those lenses and have used them with a P65+ and Aptus II 10. They are not as sharp as their digital equivalents but have a much bigger image circle. This is especially relevant with the 72mm as the most image circle you can get with that focal length in a digital lens is 100mm with the Rodenstock W.
You may like the look they give, which is less contrasty.
You should use both at F11 for maximum sharpness.

For what it's worth, Schneider consider the 72mm one of their analogue lenses more suitable for digital work and Andreas Gursky apparently uses one.
