Suggestions for Slovenia?
« on: February 26, 2011, 12:09:42 pm »

I'm spending about a week vacationing in Slovenia this May, and am thinking about exactly where to go there. I definitely want to see some of the caves in the Karst region, but does anyone here have any other suggestions, for photographic locations (I mostly do landscapes, a few cityscapes) or in general?

Thanks,
Lisa

Slovenia is a beautiful small country. From its capital Ljubljana, it is just one hour drive to the Alps and the Adriatic sea. So, plenty of opportunities for mountain photography (e.g. Triglav mountain), numerous lakes, the most famous of which is Bled, with its tiny island with a church in the middle, Lake Bohinj, etc. Also Postojna cave. Towns are old, small and lovely, similar to Austrian and Italian. Food and wine are equally good. Have a good time!

Echoing Slobodan, Lake Bled is a must-see location - perhaps the most beautiful location in Europe, and I've seen most.

I echo Slobodan and Feppe. If you are willing to walk you can follow many beautiful routes with excellent Landscape opportunities. I used the following guide book Slovenia (Landscapes) by David Robertson, Publisher Sunflower Books. This pocket-sized full-colour guide describes car tours and walks not only in the Julian Alps and the Trigllav National Park, but in many other, less well known but still beautiful parts of the country. Fold-out touring maps, large-scale (1:50,000) topo walking maps. Local transport information. Free on-line update service with specific route change information. Providing the new edition has not changed the walk then the easy walk around Lake Bled is well worth the climb as it gives a great view of the lake.
Have a great time.

Also suggest the drive along the Soca river (a striking green colour) through the fantastic mountains and passes in the Triglav area. Start at the south end near Nova Gorica and head north approx parallel to the Italian border. Road leads thru/past Triglav national park via Kanal, Tolmin, Kobarid, Bovec, Trenta, ends up at Kranjska Gora (in the far north-west of Slovenia) where you can then head east towards Bled and Bohinj.

Kamniska Bistrica north of Domzale is also good, as are the alps along Austrian border, east of Dravograd.

Lovely country, I made one of my favourite photos from the castle overlooking lake Bled.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I've ordered book, Kathy (and yes, we're hikers, so any special hiking suggestions would be welcome)  I'll look up the other locations in my guidebook and check them out.

Thanks, all

Croatia, not Slovenia, but that may be close enough.  In any event if I ever get close Plitvice National Park is absolutely on my list.

I saw a wonderful hi def program on the area on PBS a couple of year ago - and a friend has been there - looks fantastic.

Too late, Tim.  I've been to Plitvice already, a couple of years ago. ;D  It was still winter, though, which kept the crowds away but the winter vegetation was brown and gray, not green, which detracted from the experience (though the falls were still really cool).  Photos I've seen of it in summer make it look really, really crowded.  Maybe spring would be the best time?  (I think I was there in March, which was still more winter than spring.)

On this trip I may pop over the border into Istria (also Croatia), which I missed on my last trip to Croatia.  Right now I'm thinking about stay in Piran (quiant Slovenian coastal town just north of Croatia) for a few nights and at Lake Bled for a few nights, and use those as bases for day trips.  I still need to research a little more before I make the final decision, though.

Thanks,
Lisa
