A simple rose ...
« on: February 25, 2011, 03:58:37 pm »

As the title tells:
A simple rose from our tea kitchen at work, taken with an S95 at f2.0 and ISO 400 ...
I didn't post images here for a while, but since I'm amazed what can be done with
this simple P/S camera I thought I'd post it here.
Maybe it will keep someone from buying an MFDB system ... ;)
Cheers ...

I like this. A very simple and beautiful picture. The chiaroscuro lighting is very nice. The shallow depth of field works. Nice bokeh too. For a little compact camera it's impressive.

Chris...all too easily said from the sidelines and after the fact, but I almost thirst for the innermost partially open "mouth" of this bloom to be in exquisitely perfect focus ... some nice character to those petals...

ps. ...still really love "Out of the window" in your fluidom group...a print could almost keep you cooled in the fires of summer...

Thank you both for the nice words.
Actually I was quite hesitant to post it, but in the end decided to do so,
because I have problems to justify buying a better camera  :P .

For me this P/S camera has become a very important tool, because
it offers a bunch of creative and technical features which are completely pocketable.
I had to defend the buy against my spouse, since I already have a G11, but
even the G11 is still too big to be truely pocketable. The S95 is with me 24/7.

After seeing what can be done with this little camera I am questioning myself if  should
really get a better camera at all (Arca Swiss F-line, D3X/D3S, Phamiya and Hassy are on my 'ponderlist').
Seems some contradicting concepts of photography are fighting with each other in my brain about dominance.

And I wonder what van Gogh, Picasso or Matisse would have done with such a P/S camera .....

And yes, Patricia - if you crave for more sharpness and detail, I believe the image works as intended ...
And thanks Pop, for teaching me another word ..Chia..what? - lighting - Wikipedia is my friend as usual.  ;)

I have a S90 and it can get very nice photos, more so in the macro mode. However you need good (so you don't get too high on the iso, 400 it's almost too much) and not tricky light (it blows the highlights quite easily, even if I have it default at -1/3). So when conditions are good it offers a lot, but it's not perfect. It does have the advantage that you can have it with you at all times though.

Yes, the easiness and speed of use is sooo seductive...

... and dangerous, as could lead to taking it too easy. For instance, I do not mind the out-of-focus rose on the right side... it adds depth to the image. However, I do find the white-red one sticking out on the left side distracting.
