From the street – let's keep Russ happy
« on: February 21, 2011, 01:32:09 am »

I'm sure that there isn't a dedicated street photography thread so I thought I would start one. I've just changed workplaces and I'm now travelling to the CBD each day so I thought that I could concentrate more on the street. So far though I seem to have taken more tree images than anything else.

Here is one from Darling Harbour, I've called it watch out.

So feel free to contribute to this thread.

Cheers,

Good shooting, Tom. I'm on vacation on the Florida Gulf Coast for a week. I'll probably have something for this thread by the time I get back.

I do not shoot street much, but occasionally I'll get something I like. This one was shot from the upper platform of a double-decker tour bus in New York, during a night tour:

A happy snap from on the way home, I'm tentatively calling it different strokes.

Just wait, Tom; somebody is sure to start to tell you about angles and how you 'should' have framed it.

A street shot from Thailand, I'm sure it's just a language thing.

But not until they've told you how to crop it.

Yeah, as a woman's shoes fetichist, I must admit that those are really cool.

Nope, the shoes suck. The jeans look cool. But I once did have a Spanish version of cowboy boots.

Stiletto heels are to die for - or at least break an ankle for - but wedges/platforms were ugly each time they were inroduced. The legs look nice enough though.

Nice image, regardless of fashion sins. Just the sort of thing I never find on my St Helena, though it problably exists did I know where to look.

Maybe on the hills arround, where the big houses are located or on the yachts in the harbours.

This summer I may be there for a week at one point. I'll tell you.

I'll also try to get in touch with that friend in France because he did twice the Canal du Midi and knows a lot about it. When I have information I send you a mail.

Cheers.

Bob, I like very much how you grade the tones in general in your pictures. Good works.

Yes, but that means driving to Portals Nous and without somebody willing to pay me... no way, José!

As for a statue being the subject of street photography. Several years ago I had a work project where I had to take images of public statues in Sydney. Most of the images I took had nothing to do with the street. The one statue that had a great deal of interaction was Il Porcellino the wild boar in the image. He is outside Sydney Hospital and is used for fund raising, rub his nose and you'll have good luck. Over the years he has taken on a new role all on his own, rub him elswere and you'll increase your fertility. I could have had a hand in the image but I though that I would leave that up to people's imaginations. Street photography can include how people react to thheir environment and I think Il Porcellino fits the bill.

Interestingly I'm in two minds as to whether the bomb image is a steet image. It was more of a bump to get the thread started.

**Disclaimer:  The Weimaraner in this photo is not Jasmine.  Just a couple of dogs out walking their humans, taking a little play break.

This is a great street shot. Like it a lot, and I'm happy to see more dogs again here.

These guys were playing a dirge for a funeral procession that crawled through the middle of Chinatown in San Francisco last Sunday during the Chinatown Street Festival.
