changing white balance in video
« on: February 19, 2011, 01:04:36 pm »

Hi. I've just finished my first "convergence" job. All went relatively smoothly, but I have an issue with colour I thought someone may be able to help me with.
For various reasons, I shot the stills with my digital back and shot video with 5Dmk2. It was models on white back drop in studio.
Everything is fine except for several outfits where a red dress is somewhat orange in the video.
Having never edited colour in video, could someone recommend suitable software, preferably as simple as possible. I'm quite happily editing the in and out, and cropping, and downsizing in mpegstream. It has simple exposure editing but no colour. Also sharpening a bit would be helpful too.

Thanks for any advice

Hi,

There are good simple NLE softwares that will provide the basic tools you want.

-Avid Pinnacle: http://www.avid.com/ES/products/family/Studio
-Adobe Premiere elements: http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/
-Edius Neo: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/edius_neo_3
I miss some

a freeware: http://avidemux.org/

Keep in mind that unlike your stills (I guess you shoot RAW), unless you do not work in RAW video like RED ONE (and even so, nothing comparable with your backs), you'll see that the use of sharpening is not fun at all (I avoid it) and color grading a science in itself. It's practise practise and practise.

Also, think that the most problematic in video is the sound. (let's say that the sound is generally the weakest part of image's guys). If you plan to work on your own, maybe you should give a lot of attention to the sound and not that much on the image render because that you will get it after a while and efforts.

You also want to keep an eyes on softwares like Adobe After Effects if you want to drastically affect your footage.

Good luck.

I think the cheapest and easiest route is going to be using Colorista II in either Premier or Final Cut. It really is a very intuitive and well done color program especially for someone (like me) with very little experience.

When shooting video with a Canon supporting uploading of curves into the camera body, i.e. 5D's and 1DmkIV (7D ??) - shoot a RAW file in the light you intend to use with all other parameters set to what you intend to shoot the video with and correct this still with Canon's RAW tool to your liking. Then make a custom curve inside the Canon software representing this result and upload to the camera and start shooting video with excellent results. Keep it simple and it works great.
If this sounds strange please use Google or wait for someone else to lay out the details, I am not using my Canons for this purpose.

As aaronleitz mentioned. Colorista II is the way to go if you are looking for something simple yet enough to help your footage.

I thought I should add a bit of closure to my original post. Thanks for the advice.
In the end I simply did it in photoshop. I had never bothered upgrading from CS2, and so wasn't really thinking about being able to do for video what I do for photos. Googling around a bit I noticed a short tutorial on editing video in CS3.
Long and the short of it - downloaded a trial version of CS3 for the time being and it worked a treat, very simple and adding a layer mask for levels, colour balance, or selective colour, took just seconds for each video.
Cheers

open the video (drag it into photoshop)

click on window menu and open the animation window
this allows you to move through the video to where you want, and allows you to choose a start and end point also

click on create new fill or adjustment layer (which is the small round half black half white button at the bottom of the layers/channels/paths window, and this gives you the option of adjusting pretty much anything you want for the whole video.

If you don't create an adjustment layer then it only adjusts the frame you're looking at.

One thing I had to google for was how to save the video. Being used to just "save as" I couldn't figure it out. So, go to file - export - render. This gives you the option to save the video in various formats.

I had to crop the videos for the client to a specific size, and even though I could crop the video with the crop tool in photoshop it would only render to standard video formats. At least I didn't see any other option. So when the cropped video was rendered it became distorted. Mpegstream, which is free, gives you a lot more options in this area.

cheers

its my understanding that only CS4 extended and CS5 extended offer video color correction? is this correct? by chance is it limited to only PC versions? i am a long time PS user and budding videographer and would really like to use controls i am used to.

i like the comment from earlier about taking a raw still image and making a curve for it, then applying it to the video. just remember video is akin to shooting jpgs, all settings in the camera effect it very much and it doesnt have the range of latitude of a raw still image, no where near it. if you have any exposure/color balance issues take a jpg for reference. shoot your video flat, use atleast neutral with contrast all the way down or install cinestyle.
