show us your professional setups
« on: February 12, 2011, 02:26:56 pm »

Looking at set-up photos is a fantastic way to learn. Why don't we do a thread with collected set-up pictures?

I start:

http://www.randlkofer.com/microsites/food_photography_setups/index.html

I mostly use DSLRs, but if someone puts a gun to my head i even use MFD, as you can see.

Thank you so much for sharing the "intimacy" of your set-ups. Very interesting and illustrative. Of special interest to me is to see that you mostly (apparently) use a dslr with TS glass.
Eduardo

P.S. Just for you is an awesome video, thanks!

These photos are like potato chips- once you start looking, you can't stop 'til they're all done!
Question:  I've been looking recently for the little clamps on weighted round bases for holding reflectors that you show in the first dozen or so images.
Where can you get these?  Or did you make them yourself from various parts?
Thanks for sharing!

They are made by Fisso and are the best piece of equipment I came upon in recent years. They are obscenely expensive at around 200€ a pop, but worth every penny. Foba makes similar ones, even more expensive. I tried many other 'third hands', as they are called, in recent years, but anything cheaper is junk.

www.profot.ch   sells them

Nice idea, thank for sharing. I like the clamps, too. May be you should ask for a promotion fee from profot  ::)

I just requested price quotes for some items. These articulated arms are just what I need. I was about to buy some more Manfrotto magic arms but these are generally smaller and with the base you can use them differently.

Yes, magic arms are too big for many applications, we just ordered Manfrotto hydrostatic arms some days ago. These arms are provided with a hydraulic locking mechanism, come in different sizes and look VERY promising. In the same price range. If interested, take a look at 819-1, 814-1 or the kits with nano clamp 830 and 827. They don´t have a base though, but I suppose I´ll get some made locally, just need to cut the thread. Looking forward to play with them :P

Thx! I will have a look at those too. I have seen the smaller Manfrottos before, I think I should give them a closer look. It is comforting to see that I am not the only one that has closets full of this stuff (and still feel things are missing). I think I have spent a small fortune on these things by now :)

Ulf,
May I know how your LCD display is mounted into the lid
of the Calzone-type case?

Is Denise still able to stand upright after a day of shooting with the H in portrait? I still can't understand Hasselblads oversight to offer a grip for that camera.

Manfrotto hydrostatic arms vs. Foba vs. Fisso
« Reply #13 on: February 13, 2011, 10:23:54 am »

I tried them all. I think they all work on the same principle. My observations:

Manfrotto hydrostatic arms: they don't feel as precise as the others, and the knobs are smaller

Foba: the best, but also the most expensive ones. very clever clamp/hook. there is a version with progressive tightening, but they are at around 400€ each.

Fisso: handle as nicely as the Fobas, but are quite cheaper, especially if you buy the set. one drawback is that their treads are not like the tripod threads, so monting a camera is out, but I don't do that anyway

I keep on buying more and more of these. Nowadays I can't imagine working with anything of lesser precision. whatever you need to fix, they hold it. They are very sloppy when untightened, so you can adjust easily. tighten the knob and there is no more movement. sweet! for heavier stuff i use the magic arm.

Just use a wall mount. Make sure there is enough space to the back and the sides to ensure air ventilation for cooling. One of the best things, we ever made, could not imgagine to work without them any more.

Well - she was used to handheld the RZ before, which might have been more ergonomic because of the rotating back. No way to get her to use a stand. But in case Hasselblad should ever offer a vertical grip I´m sure it won´t be for H1/ H2.  ???
Thanks for your input regarding the hydrostatic arms, will take a look at the others, too. See - it´s all about gear once more.

Cheers, Ulf
