Grand Teton National Park by Mile Heckler
« on: February 07, 2011, 12:25:02 pm »

Love it! The clickable PDF map is great! Need I say anything more?

There is something else... photographers often concentrate on sunrise/sunset because of shadows/colour. There are many hours in the day and not all parts of parks like Grand Teton National Park will see "good light" at the same hour. Thus it's not just where to park your butt at sunrise and wait but also "if you hike X miles down some trail in mid-July, being at place Y mid-morning/afternoon will...".

If I'm spending a chunk of money on a "holdiay" in Jackson Hole to explore and photograph the Tetons, I want to get the most out of all 12+ hours of daylight, not just 2. Thus if I'm looking to spend money on a photographic guide for a location, it needs to offer a way to fill in most of those hours...

I just returned from the Jackson Hole area after spending October there and have to say the map is spot on.  Great idea!

Don

By the way don't forget the Moulton Barn on Mormon Row which is just across the road...

I agree about the excessive emphasis on sunrise/sunset light. See the following link for an image from the Schwabacher landing from the supposedly "bad" light of mid-day and let me know what you think:

Touché, Tuan! That photo alone (the mid-day one, of course) makes your case. Beautiful, as always.

I agree about the excessive emphasis on sunrise/sunset light.

And those lovely places are much less crowded, even a short while after the sun rises. For sunsets, it might be different as photographers try to come early to get the best spots.

I ordered the pdf yesterday using paypal but have not received any response back from Miles / WyoFOTO LLC. Today I attempted to send him an email (info1@wyofoto.com) as directed in the paypal receipt but the email came back as undeliverable.

Any thoughts? Michael

I have no record of a paypal transaction completing from anyone named Berlin.

I am sorry if you have had difficulty trying to purchase our photoguide.

That info1 email you used is obsolete,  we have not used it for 2 years.
You need to use info2@wyofoto.com or wyofoto_llc@bresnan.net

How can I help you?

Thanks,
Miles

Grand Teton NP is a particularly interesting example, because if you go in the fall to catch the colors in the trees, the light on the mountains will be pretty flat and uninteresting at sunrise, especially if you don't have good clouds, due to the angle the sun rises at relative to the mountains. I actually had more success with mid-to-late morning, when the angle of the sun allowed a polarizer to deepen the sky and bring out the saturation in the foliage colors.

It would be nice to see a feature article or two on landscape shooting during the "inbetween hours" - i.e. the hours after the "golden" hour of sunrise and before the "golden" hour of sunset. For example, what makes a location a good candidate for it? I seem to recall reading one of Michael's stories about how he got up early, was out of bed for maybe 1 or 2 hours, then back to bed for the rest of the day until late afternoon. There's got to be better ways to make use of the sunlight during the day!
